Obituary of Shirley Mae Lumsden
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Mae Lumsden. She passed away peacefully with family by her side on April 29, 2025, at the age of 83 in Long Term Care.
Shirley was born on February 5, 1942, to Ole and Eleanor Walle, joining two older siblings. Her dad passed away when she was only four months old. When her mom remarried, along came eight more bundles of joy. Growing up she was kept busy with farm chores and looking after all those little brothers and sisters.
Shirley attended school in Endiang until Grade 9. She had to ride her horse to a neighbor’s place to catch the school bus. She transferred to Byemoor for Grade 10. Once finishing school, she continued to work on the family farm, but moved into Hanna in 1958 where she began working for AGT. She met her beloved James (Jim) and they were married in Endiang, March 18, 1960, and moved out to the Lumsden family farm. She had to leave her job with AGT after that, as they would not employ married women. She soon had a new job though, as Jim and Shirley welcomed their children rather quickly, having three in three years! Kathy arriving in July 1960, Steven in July 1961 and then Myles in November 1962. Although busy on the farm and with the children, she was very involved in the Solon Community Club. They remained out on the family farm until moving into town in 1997.
Shirley was an active member of the Royal Purple, Sunshine Club and First United Church. Always willing to donate her time or a delicious square. She loved music, whether it be playing or listening. She was a wonderful piano player, playing in various bands throughout the years in her community. When part of the “Old Time” band, any money donated to them was given to STARS. Over the years, they were able to give quite a contribution. Her and her sister, Irene started the “Country Friends” band where they played at the Lodge and Nursing Homes in Hanna and area. If she wasn’t at a Jamboree, she was watching one on YouTube, happy to point out people she knew and tell you all about the bands. She also enjoyed crocheting, curling, softball, snowmobiling with dear friends and neighbours, Bingo and card games galore. Whenever possible, she looked forward to family gatherings, swapping stories and sharing laughs.
Shirley had a great sense of humor, a kind and generous heart. Always there to listen and offer advise if needed. Forever fair and without judgement. Beyond proud of her family, eager to share our achievements.
Shirley will be deeply missed by her children: Kathy (Lonnie) Sieppert, Steven (Hilda) Lumsden and Myles (Elsie) Lumsden; grandchildren: Sabrina (Paul) Dennis, Cindy (Steve) Anderson, Shaun Lumsden, Cathrine Ysmael, Lorenz (Jessa) Ysmael and Justin (Shena) Ysmael; great grandchildren: Taysen and Rhyett Dennis, Asher and Blayke Anderson, Jaylyn Fogtmann, Dave Ysmael and Julienne Ysmael; brothers: Gordy (Roxy) Gallagher, Wayne (Patsy) Gallagher, Kenny Gallagher, Sisters: Lynn (Steve) Anderson, Lorainne (Kris) Peterson, Bev Gallagher, and sisters-in-law Joyce Campbell and Marjorie Miller; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Jim; parents Ole and Eleanore Walle; stepfathers: Walter Gallagher and Berger Aaserud; grandson: Jolann Ysmael; brothers: Arnold Walle, Chester Gallagher and Bruce Gallagher; brothers-in-law: Sonny Brooker, Keith Lumsden, Wilf Lumsden, Richard Weisse, Jack Hutchings and Jim Miller; sister: Irene Brooker; sisters-in-law: Sandy Gallagher, Ila Lumsden, Norma Weisse and Merle Hutchings.
