It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of Shirley Sharpe-Marshall, age 91, on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Carleton Manor, in Woodstock, NB. Born December 16, 1933, in Jacksontown, NB, she was the youngest daughter of Harold and Jean (Culberson) Gartley.
Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her first husband, Ralph Sharpe, of Jacksonville, siblings Ivan Gartley (Louise), Robert Gartley, Doris Dickinson (Clarence), Ralph Gartley (Ruth), Weldon Gartley, Glen Gartley. Sister-in-law Marie McGuire, Brother-in-law, Melvin Kurt, Eugene McConnell, Lin McGuire.
Shirley is survived by her second husband, Charles Marshall , Angus, Ontario, her much-loved children Sherry DeWare (Jerry), Roy Sharpe (Ann), Gary Sharpe (Esther), Barry Sharpe (Heather), cherished grandchildren Mitchell DeWare (Carolyn), Courtney Hallett, Whitney DeWare, Kyle Sharpe(Emma), Kirby Sharpe (Jenna), Michelle Drake (Trenton), Melissa Keenan (Jared), Nick Davidson (Courtney), Maggie Amos (Tyler), JoAnne Sharpe (Mason), Daniel Sharpe(Naomi), Sarah Sharpe (Zack), Laura Sharpe, Hannah Sharpe (Joel), her precious great-grandchildren Emma, Ryan, Delilah, Xavier, Penelope, Theo, Canaan, Eli, Eden, Silas, Lennon, Andi, Addy, Braydn, Maddy, Emma, Jack, Liam, Tanner, Alyce, Bently, Charlie, Zoey, Ava, Jake, Malcolm and Bennett, Sister-in-laws Joyce Gartley, Alma Gartley, Ruth Kurt, Deannie Long, Stella Sharpe, Brother-in-law Gerald Sharpe and many treasured nieces and nephews.
Mom worked on the family farm picking potatoes, dragging four children along with her. She also worked at a shirt factory in Woodstock, the local drive-in theatre canteen, and Cluff’s Clothing, before retiring after 24 years working at DeWare’s General Store.
Over the years Mom enjoyed knitting, baking, quilting and surprise visits to friends, neighbor’s, and family. Her bright smile and delightful laugh embodied her outgoing personality. Her kindness and generosity overflowed and was evident to all who knew her. Her door was always open. Mom would greet you with a hug and there was always a sweet treat waiting for you. Visits might even include a few coins for the grandchildren’s piggy banks.
Mom enjoyed gathering with family and friends on any occasion and especially at Christmas. The Sharpe family Christmas was always a big deal. Mom’s home was filled with lots of family, food, love, and laughter. Her homemade bread and stuffing recipes passed on, as best they can, with ‘a dash of this and some of that’ to go by. Going for a drive to look for wildlife was common. You can be sure that even if no one else did, Mom would see a deer, or 2 or 3. It was an ongoing game to report the highest number on any given outing. She also enjoyed the views from her window, the people, the flowers and the hummingbirds. The little things were some of the biggest delights.
Even the move to Ontario couldn’t separate us from her love. She made several trips home with Charles and enjoyed even more phone calls and photos. We continued to keep up with news from a far until a hard move home in 2022.
In her final years, dementia tried to take over, but her love for us shone through. She continued to enjoy visits, jokes and a love for ice cream. As a faithful and devoted support to her large family, she will forever remain in our hearts as we cherish wonderful memories.
Visitation will be held at The Carleton Funeral Home & Crematorium 337 Lockhart Mill Road, Jacksonville, NB, on Tuesday June 3, 2025, from 5 -8PM.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday June 4, 2025, from the Carleton Funeral Home Chapel at 2PM.
Interment will be in the Woodstock Rural Cemetery.
