At his home on Friday February 28, 2025. Shinichi Sawada, of Hamilton, in his 85th year. Cherished friend of Mike and the late Gail Robinet and their family.
Shinichi came to Canada on a working holiday in 1971. He fell in love with the country and decided to make it his adopted home. He remained passionate about his Japanese heritage and returned to his hometown of Toyama every five years to visit family and friends. He was involved in the Japanese Cultural Centre, and had many friends among the Japanese diaspora.
Shinichi’s kind heart was exemplified by his role of caring for Japanese Canadian seniors as administrator of the Nipponia Home in Beamsville for 30 years. He kept in touch with many of the residents throughout their lifetimes after the home was closed.
Shinichi is remembered for his vast curiosity about people and the world around him. He travelled across the country, from Vancouver to St. John’s and extensively throughout Southern Ontario, including Manitoulin Island and Algonquin Park. He loved nature and was an avid photographer, capturing the changing of the seasons from autumn leaves to cherry blossoms.
He enjoyed meeting new people, whether at his ESL classes, around a dinner table, or while he was roaming the city he loved, Hamilton. He campaigned locally for the NDP party and was a staunch supporter of Andrea Horvath.
Shinichi had a wonderful sense of humour, which came to life at times like Hallowe’en, when he would delight the kids with his costumes and pranks. He was a welcome guest at family gatherings and always had a seat at the table. He was a joyful spirit who will be sorely missed.
Family and friends are welcome to gather at the Keith Ovington Funeral Home, 134 King Street, Burford on Thursday May 15, 2025 from 1-2 pm followed by a Celebration of Shinichi’s Life at 2 pm. Interment Pioneer Cemetery, Burford . Keith Ovington 519-449-1112. www.keithovington.ca
