Shay Yellow Horn Obituary
In loving memory of Shay Murray Yellow Horn, Apiiwakosis Sapohp (Morning Plume) of the Piikani Nation. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shay on December 21, 2024, at the age of 51.
Shay is survived by his devoted wife of 28 years, MarNai Yellow Horn-Hunt, and their children: Tay-Lynne (JC David)-Hunt, Tyis Yellow Horn, and Carter Yellow Horn. He is predeceased by his beloved son, Channer Yellow Horn.
Shay also leaves behind his father, Murray (Margaret) Yellow Horn, and his mother, Shirley Jean Thomas. He is lovingly remembered by his siblings: Trace Van Olm, Colton Yellow Horn, and Clay Yellow Horn. On his Yellow Horn side, his aunties and uncles: Caroline Yellow Horn, Linda (Willard) Yellowface, Bryan (Melanie) Yellow Horn, Charlotte (David) McLeod, Lenora Yellow Horn, Alvin Yellow Horn, Bernice Yellow Horn-Grier (deceased 2022), Rick (Kathy, deceased 2022) Yellow Horn, and Myron Jay Yellow Horn (deceased 1965). On his Thomas side, his aunties and uncles: A.J. Thomas, Jamie Thomas (deceased), Susan McDonald, Burns Thomas (Deceased), Sharan (Don) Thomas, Roberta (Russel) Thomas, and Joseph Thomas (deceased). Shay is also predeceased by his grandfather Charles Robert Thomas and grandmother Shirley Hovis – Thomas.
Shay’s educational journey began at Canyon Elementary School in Pincher Creek, followed by Matthew Halton School for his junior years, and Carihi High School in Campbell River for his senior years. He pursued post-secondary education at Mount Royal University and SAIT, majoring in Business.
A gifted athlete, Shay excelled in basketball, achieving the prestigious title of All Canadian Basketball Player (Top 10 in Canada) while playing for SAIT. His competitive spirit and love for the game took him across North America. Shay was also passionate about baseball, golf, horseback riding, and basketball.
Professionally, Shay dedicated 20 years to Community Futures as a Senior Labour Market Consultant. He and his wife, MarNai, were also the proud former owners of Yellow Horn Towing Company.
Shay’s father fondly recalls memories of Shay helping around the ranch, playing with his cousins at his grandparents’ house, riding Molly, the “mean Shetland pony,” exploring the creek, and playing together in the Oki Basketball Tournament. His mother cherishes memories of Shay learning to ride horses and playing Star Wars with his friend, using their horses as trusty steeds in their adventures. She fondly remembers him as the most honest and sweetest little boy, lovingly remembering him as “Shaybee” and how everyone loved Shay.
Shay’s wife, MarNai, and children will always remember him for his patient, loving, kind, and compassionate nature, which shone brightly in their everyday lives.
A wake service will be held on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Snodgrass Funeral Homes Pincher Creek Chapel, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A funeral service will follow on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at the Piikani Community Hall at 11:00 AM. After the service, Shay will be laid to rest at the Yellow Horn Family Plot on Piikani Nation for interment.
