It is with both sadness and thankfulness that we announce Serge Nazarenko’s passing on December 20, 2024. We share his confidence in an eternity with his Lord and Savior.
Serge was born in Pylyava Ukraine, the youngest of six children born to Elsa and Philemon Nazarenko. The second world war played a significant role in his life as a young boy and teenager. His oldest brother Paul left home after being enlisted in the Soviet army. In 1943 an air attack destroyed the family home killing his mother Elsa, sister Nadia, and brothers Volodya and Boris. Serge survived with his father and sister Vera.
A decision was made to leave the Ukraine and after time spent in Poland and Germany, Serge, his father and sister emigrated to Canada under the sponsorship of a Ukrainian farming family in Hyas, Saskatchewan. From there Serge moved to Saskatoon where he met his wife Justina while working at the University of Saskatchewan.
It was a particular joy to be able to reconnect with his brother after WW II which eventually led to a couple visits to Canada and eventually immigration for Paul and his wife Sonia and their family to Canada.
Through his life Serge’s faith led to a commitment of service to the community in which he lived, whether through his church or directly with friends and neighbors. He also never forgot his roots in the Ukraine. He was able to travel there on several occasions and throughout his life offered support to his network of friends and regularly helped others in Canada to establish and maintain contact with their own relatives and friends.
Serge is survived by his wife Justina who he met while working at the University of Saskatchewan, his son Dennis (Donna) and daughter Marlene (Sam), two grandchildren Matthew (Sarah) and Ashley and two great grandsons Liam and Erik.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, 2:00 p.m., at Fairmont Baptist Church, 333 Fairmont Drive, Saskatoon, SK.
