Mrs. Sandra Doreen Curtis (nee Almas), age 78 years, passed away peacefully in her home with family by her side on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
Sandy was born in Brantford on August 29, 1947. She worked in the Kitchens at St. Joseph’s and Brantford General Hospitals prior to retirement. Sandy, along with her husband Bill, enjoyed many memorable family trips over the years, travelling all over North America. She loved coffee time with her friends, discussing current events and politics, playing cards or a good game of Bingo with family. Sandy was a big fan of Country Music, especially Charley Pride. She was also an avid Blue Jays fan, rarely missing a game and enjoyed watching curling. Bowling was a favourite pastime for both her and Bill.
Above all else, Sandy’s family was her passion. She was affectionately known as “Nana” to her kids and grandkids, and she was truly proud of each one of them. Time spent together brought her the greatest joy, and no gathering or visit would be complete without cooking up a delicious meal or spoiling guests with treats, especially her famous cheesecakes which were always on everyone’s list of holiday dinner necessities.
Sandy was truly a one of a kind lady, and to know her was to love her. She brought many laughs and smiles to all of those in her life. She was a woman who spoke her mind, but was always there to offer support, encouragement and advice to those who needed it. Her love, sense of humour and big heart will live on in the memories we are left with.
Sandy will be deeply missed by her children, Lori Ann MacKenzie, Debra (Roger) French, Jane Ellis (Derek Hynes), Ronald (Amy) Curtis and Tammy Curtis (Rob Yeoman). She was a loving Nana to grandchildren Matthew, Jennifer (Brad), Laura (Ryan) and Leah (Brett), Taylor (Eric), Christopher (Alexis) and Logan (Alex), Sarah (Sean), Eric (Megan), Kyle (Kaylea), Bradley and Stephanie (Dawson) as well as her great-grandchildren Emily, Mia, Peyton, Paislee, Kaiden, Keira, Kendra, Lucas, Sophia, Mason, Theo, and two more whom she was excited to meet in 2025. She also leaves behind her 6 step-children, Robert (Susan), Sandy, Donna (Brian), David (Linda), Edward (Jane), Debbie and their families; her sisters Norma, Margaret (Mike), Janet (Ed) and brothers Edward, Keith and John (Linda) as well as her two best friends, Elaine and Albina, numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband William “Bill” Curtis; her parents Ralph Almas and Maria Landreville (nee Masse); siblings Fred, Jean, Dorothy, Shirley and Garry; sons-in-law Jim MacKenzie and Larry Ellis; her great-granddaughter Madelyn Young; brother-in-law Frank (Anne) Kertesz and nephew Stephen Almas.
Sandy wanted it known that she had a wonderful, fun filled life and we are proud of the legacy she left us to carry on. She was so thankful for the care she received from her family, allowing her to remain in her home. Although she fought hard and courageously everyday, she was comforted knowing when her time came, so many loved ones were waiting for her in Heaven, especially Bill and her special great-granddaughter Maddie.
A Graveside service in honour of Sandy will be held at a later date in Oakhill Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband Bill. Arrangements entrusted to the Keith Ovington Funeral Home, 134 King Street, Burford. Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of Sandy to the SickKids Foundation would be greatly appreciated. Keith Ovington 519-449-1112. www.keithovington.ca
