After lengthy illness, Richard died at his home in Burlington, Ontario surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at the age of 85. He leaves behind his dedicated wife of 52 years Halina, and loving children Przemek Sychterz (Jennifer Rayworth), Dorothy Cziraki and Derek Sychterz (Mandie Ristic). He will be forever loved and remembered by his grandchildren Nicole, Natalie, Sophie and Hugo – all of whom gave him such pride and joy. They were truly the light of his life. Richard is also survived by his siblings Zygmunt, Marysia and Antoni and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his siblings Jozef, Irena, Leszek, Zosia and Janina.
Born in Poland, Richard left the country and its challenges after the Second World War and, at the age of 29, arrived in Montreal where he ultimately met and married Halina. His career took them to Edmonton and then Toronto, with the family settling in the Burlington area in 1978, where they have called home ever since. He was incredibly proud of his career and accolades as an airplane mechanic, working for Ward Air and Canadian Airlines before retiring in 2000. The family would like to thank Dr. Nisker, Dr. Filipowicz, the Halton Police and paramedics for their care and compassion.
Visitation will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street (one block north of City Hall), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333) on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church (at the corner of Brant Street and Blairholm Avenue), Burlington on Thursday, April 10, 2025 at 11 a.m. Interment Greenwood Cemetery, Burlington. Reception to follow at the funeral home.
