Ruth Rosa Dewhurst (nee Reichert) was born on February 6, 1926 to Karl and Anna (Weiss) Reichert near Quill Lake, Saskatchewan. At the age of three her mother passed away and her father remarried her stepmother Frieda. Tragedy struck again and Frieda passed away. Ruth and her father continued living on the farm and he eventually remarried again to Ethel and in 1937 Ruth became a big sister to Royce, followed by Alan, and finally a sister Lorna. She eventually met and married Norman Dewhurst following his return from the war in 1945. They began farming in the Archerwill area and in 1950 welcomed their only child, a daughter, Lois. They spent the next nearly 30 years operating the Crescent Co-op farm near Archerwill.
In 1977 they sold the farm and moved to Melfort where Ruth resided until her passing. Together in their retirement they enjoyed travelling and taking on a new role as grandparents first of Peggy in 1977 and then Landon in 1979. Unfortunately their retirement time would be cut short when Norman passed away suddenly in 1980.
Ruth continued her travels with family members seeing a portion of Canada and parts of the US on bus tours. In the mid-1980s Ruth decided to billet hockey players from the Melfort TMs hockey team and subsequently the Melfort Mustangs, going to every home game and even being a regular rider on the fan bus for away games. She continued this late into the 1990s.
In 2003 she took on yet another new role becoming a great-grandmother to William and then Evolet in 2009. Ruth lived in her own house until she was 88 years old when she moved into Caskey Place where she resided until her passing.
Ruth was lovingly known as “Grandma Ruth” to dozens of neighbourhood children and could be found having endless conversations with them while tending to her garden and likely passing them some form of home-made baking. Her home was always grand-central with friends and family stopping in and often staying for a few days or even boarding for a few months when needed.
Ruth was fond of saying that “behaving was no fun” and to “never let them guess what you are going to do next”. She was spitfire from start to finish!
Ruth was predeceased by her husband Norman, father Karl, mother Anna, step-mothers Frieda and Ethel, a brother in infancy, brother Royce, brother-in-law Grant McLean, and son-in-law Peter Welter.
She will be lovingly missed by her daughter Lois Welter of Nokomis SK; granddaughter Peggy Welter of Regina SK; grandson Landon (Karen) Welter and great-grandchildren William and Evolet Welter of Rosetown SK; brother Alan (Joan) Reichert of Saskatoon SK; sister Lorna McLean of North Battleford SK; sister-in-law Darlene Reichert of Calgary SK; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan.
A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Fedusiak Funeral Chapel in Melfort, SK.
