It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of
Russell Eugene Fisher, who passed away
peacefully at the age of 91. Born in Great Village (affectionately
known as “Little Big Town”) in 1933 to the late Earle and
Myrtle (Vance) Fisher, Russell lived a life devoted to service,
education, and community.
Russell’s journey took him from Westmount to
Parrsboro, where he received his early education, before settling in
Springhill in 1952. His passion for teaching led him to Normal College
in Truro, where he graduated in 1960. He began his teaching career in
Wolfville before dedicating 29 years to the Atlantic Provinces
Resource Centre for the Hearing Impaired in Amherst. A lifelong
learner, Russell furthered his training at Smith College in
Massachusetts and was deeply committed to his students, eventually
becoming Supervisor of the Multi-Handicapped Department. He also
served as Regional Director of the Association of Canadian Educators
for the Hearing Impaired, where he edited their
journal.
Russell’s contributions to the Springhill community
were immeasurable. As a longtime member of the Springhill Heritage
Group, he played an instrumental role in opening the local museum,
curating exhibits, and preserving local history. His passion extended
to conservation as President of the Springhill Wildlife Association,
where he organized the first Trout A Rama and later served as Governor
of the Nova Scotia Wildlife Association. His faith and
dedication to the Springhill Baptist Church were unwavering. Russell
served in numerous leadership roles, from Chairperson of various
committees to Superintendent of the Sunday School Program. Alongside
his beloved wife, Natalie, he diligently handled church offerings for
two decades. He was also a devoted Gilwell Scouter and mentored young
boys as a Cub leader. Russell was also a proud member of the Knights
of Pythias for 57 years, serving as
secretary.
Russell’s civic contributions were
many—he served on the Springhill Police Commission, the
Cumberland Vocational School Board, the Springhill Board of School
Commissioners, and as a Springhill Town Councillor. Among all his
endeavors, however, he held a special place in his heart for his work
with the Cumberland Regional Library Board. Over 34 years—21
of which he served as board chairman—Russell championed
library development in Springhill, earning recognition from the mayor
as the driving force behind securing a new library location. His
dedication earned him an Honorary Life Membership upon
retirement. For his many contributions to his community he
was twice recognized as Springhill’s Volunteer of the
Year. In addition, he is a recent recipient of The King
Charles III’s Coronation Medal for his extraordinary service to his
community and fellow citizens.
Many people enjoyed lively political discussions with Russell
who remained a true-blue Progressive Conservative to the very
end.
Above all, Russell was a devoted family man. He was
predeceased by his loving wife, Natalie (née Corey), his
brothers, Dewenton (Dr. Fisher) and Hilbert, and his sister, Earlene
Samson. He leaves behind his children, Cathy Fox (Colin), Stacie
(Pablo Rodriguez), and John, as well as ten cherished grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
Beyond his many accomplishments, Russell will be remembered
for his kindness, wisdom, and steadfast dedication to his family,
friends, and community. His legacy of service and generosity will
continue to inspire those who were fortunate to know him. In
his own words, “Do a good deed for someone in memory of me, I’ll
be looking down on you.”
The family is deeply grateful for the support of his dear
friends Carolyn Merrey, Murray Scott, Marion MacDonald, and Jack,
Sharon, and Justin Simons—all of whom he had on speed
dial.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of A.H. Brown
