Russell Alexander “Sandy” Reid
Age 90 Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia
With great love and cherished memories, we announce the peaceful passing of Russell Alexander Reid, or “Sandy,” on February 13, 2025, at Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia.
Born in Sand Point, Nova Scotia, Russell was the son of the late Alfred and Mabel (Sarty) Reid. From a young age, he developed a deep connection to the ocean, fishing for lobster alongside his father. At just 16, he followed his brothers Lawson and Leslie to Sudbury, Ontario, where he began a lifelong career as an underground miner with INCO. After 30 years of dedicated service, he took early retirement at 51, embracing his Maritimer roots and returning east to New Brunswick and later Nova Scotia with his beloved wife, Helen. Together, they explored the Maritime provinces, making memories along the way.
Russell was well-known for his quick wit, playful teasing, and legendary feats of strength. He had an uncanny ability to barter at yard sales, strike up conversations with anyone, and keep hockey rivalries alive with good-natured banter. His passions included snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, arm-wrestling, and fixing up cars, always keeping busy with a new project. But above all, Russell had a heart of gold. His kindness knew no bounds, especially when it came to children with special needs—he had a way of making them feel like the center of the universe.
Russell is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Reid (Sudbury, Ontario); grandchildren, Chelsea Bourget and Paul Bourget; and many extended family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen Reid (Petahtegoose); his parents, Alfred and Mabel; and his brothers Lloyd, Lawson, Wilfred, Ted, Cecil, Les, and Albert; sister, Margaret MacFarlane; and Chester.
A graveside service will take place later in the summer or fall at Lockerby Memorial Cemetery, Tatamagouche, where Russell will rest close to his family. Arrangements entrusted to Coulter’s Funeral Home in Tatamagouche. Donations in his memory may be made to Willow Lodge, 100 Blair Ave., Tatamagouche, B0K 1V0.
