Peacefully, surrounded by loving family on Sunday, August 3rd, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Hospice, Ruby Irene Bailey (nee Sheffer) passed away at the age of 93. Beloved wife to the late Sherman Roy Bailey (2011). Loving mother of Jean (Zee) Bailey and Dennis Shuler, Patricia Tremblay and the late Jerry (2022), the late Debra Bailey (1982) and the late Paul Bailey (2019). Cherished grandmother of Amy Kingston, the late Nathan Kingston (1991), Michelle and Aaron Sayers. Proud great grandmother of Lucas Sayers and Sierra Sayers. Predeceased by her parents Willis and Elva Sheffer, her 7 siblings and 8 Bailey brothers and sisters in law. She is truly the last of a generation. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Ruby was born in Bickford, Ontario where her parents owned and operated the general store, post office and gas station. Mom said when she turned 16, Canada Post sent a representative to swear her in a as a clerk qualified to legally handle the mail. She didn’t tell them she had been sorting and delivering mail since she was 8 years old!
In 1948 she went on blind date with a handsome bread man from Petrolia. A year later Ruby and Sherman we married; they resided most of their 61 years of married life together in Corunna, where they raised 4 ‘wonderful’ children. After the youngest child started school, Ruby went to work at the Corunna Post Office, where she worked many years before retiring in 1986.
Ruby was a devout Christian, Sunday school teacher and active member of the Courtright Baptist, Corunna Baptist and the last many years at Huron Baptist Church. She was a prolific crafter throughout her life, teaching classes on card making.
For the past 10 years mom resided at Landmark Retirement Village where she was an active member of the community and well cared for by the wonderful staff there. Mom’s church community have been an ongoing support during life’s trials.
During mom’s illness she was cared for at Bluewater Health Palliative Care, then St Jospeh’s Hospice. Thank you to Dr. Borek, Dr. MacSweeney, all of the palliative care staff and volunteers. The family would like to recognize the compassion and dedication of the nurses and PSWs at hospice. We could not have done it without you. I thank God that we were born in Canada.
