Roy Alan Vater passed away peacefully on Monday February 24, 2025 at the age of 83. Predeceased by his brother Lorne, father George, mother Hazel, and step-father Frank Goldie. Roy leaves behind the love of his life, Bonnie, whom he met in the back room at the Chemainus Legion. Roy was a favourite uncle to many dear children of his good friends and cousin to Gloria, Glenda, and Carla and their children. Roy is remembered as the smiling, even-tempered, all-around good guy in his community.
Roy was born, raised, and lived his entire life in Chemainus. Captain ‘Vate’ went to work at Chemainus Towing (Jones Marine Service) right out of high school and remained there until his retirement forty years later. Roy and Bonnie loved to travel and camp, usually with a four-legged furry friend in tow. Roy loved to see the different scenery throughout the U.S. but especially loved touring in B.C. and Canada. Roy loved moose hunting, fishing and great times spent on Thetis Island with loved ones. Roy took up skiing in his thirties and had fifteen years of great times on the hills.
Thank you to the emergency department staff of the Cowichan General Hospital and family physician Dr. Manhas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. As per Roy’s request, there will be no service held.
We wrote your name in the sky,
but the wind blew it away.
We wrote your name in the sand,
but the waves washed it away.
We wrote your name in our hearts,
and forever it will stay.
We honour a life that was lived to the full, we honour a spirit, now free. You’ll long be remembered, whenever we say:
“Fair winds and a following sea!”
