Obituary of Rosabell Antone
On Sunday, April 13th, 2025, Rosabell ‘Wa ta ti’ Antone passed into the next realm peacefully in her sleep. A well-respected member of The Oneida Nation of the Thames, Rosabell taught the Oneida Language to all ages travelling to all three Oneida communities translating books for teaching purposes as well as writing stories in the language. She dedicated the last half of her life to the rejuvenation of the Oneida Language. Rose loved spending time with her family and friends playing cards, scrabble, Yahtzee, and she always had a puzzle in the works. She was an avid reader and had quite the book collection. She loved to travel and often would take off on one of her infamous road trips.
Rose was born at home to parents Harry and Betsy Antone on October 17th, 1933, weighing only 3lbs 3oz, she was destined to be a strong woman. True to her name she could talk for hours in either English or Oneida and loved having company over for coffee and conversation.
Rose lived a full life raising her children and ‘adopting’ their friends. Rose was predeceased by her husband Harvey, Parents Betsy and Harry Antone, siblings Julia, Leo, Levi, Billy & Wilfred, Children Sue, Marilyn, Holly and Robert, Son-in-law Bob, Grandchildren Jeeks, John, Chris, Tina, and Ed as well as Great Grandson Kenneth and Great-Great Granddaughter Kali Mae.
Rose will be missed dearly by son, William (Eloise), daughters Margaret, Sharon (Charlie), Rosaleen (Leland), Billie (Ken), Reenie (Mike), numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as her sister-in-law Judy. The family would like to thank the staff at Cornwall Community Hospital for their compassion and patience and Jasmine Jemison for coming in to read stories to Ma in the language.
Family will receive friends at the Elliott-Madill Funeral Home Ltd. (22424 Adelaide Road, Mount Brydges) on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, from 6 – 8pm . Service from the First Oneida Baptist Church (1957 Fairgrounds Road, Oneida) commencing at 11 am on Thursday, April 17th.
