Ronald Scott Speed, Lucasville, N.S.
December 17,1966 – January 22,2025
In Loving Memory of Ron Speed
A gentle giant of a man with a tremendously big heart, known for his generosity and loving nature. Ron was a man of many talents, inspiring ideas, and unwavering integrity—a truly genuine soul who loved to laugh. He was humble about his achievements, except when it came to his children. They were his pride and joy, and he often declared, “I would have 50 more just like them if I could”.
Born in Fort William, Ontario, Ron grew up in Nova Scotia, with a few short stints in Newfoundland, however, he remained a true Nova Scotian at heart. He loved his lobster and had a deep connection to water—the beach, the hot tub, the bathtub—any water indeed. No matter the season, Ron found solace and joy being near the water, often reflecting on the simple pleasures of life.
Ron passed away at The Halifax Infirmary after a brave five-year battle with heart disease. He is survived by his partner Darlene Robichaud; mother, Constance Lynn Hall; stepfather Derek Hounsell (Cherie); daughter, Sarah Lynn Speed (Jessie); son, Benjamin Wayne Speed; and his beloved kitty, Sylvester. He is also survived by his siblings, sister Lori Lee Speed (Keith) and brother Jonathan Hounsell (Nicole), and the extended Hahn family: Alicia, Daphne, and Victoria.
Ron was educated in Halifax with brief periods in Newfoundland. At the tender age of 13, he began his illustrious career by pushing an ice cream cart in downtown Halifax. Despite this modest start, his work ethic and dedication saw him climb the ranks in various fields. Known for his intelligence and hardworking nature, Ron eventually became an engineer with The Armour Group (The Ramada) for many years. Later, he pursued new opportunities in Newfoundland as Chief Engineer at Northview Developments in St. John’s. Renowned for his capability and creativity, he could transform anything worn out or considered irreparable into a work of art. Renovations were his specialty, and his many satisfied clients often referred to him as the gentle giant. His innovative mind and skillful hands continuously left an indelible mark on many projects.
Ron loved to travel, especially to sunny destinations, particularly Jamaica, where the warmth and scenery matched his vibrant spirit. Closer to home, he cherished the ocean and enjoyed whistling or singing with pure pleasure, especially when near or in the water. Whether he was hosting poker nights with his friends, delighting in a delicious meal he’d prepared, or attempting gardening—which turned out to be a great success—Ron lived life to the fullest.
He had a passion for fine food, appreciating the nuances of a perfect steak or a lovingly cooked roast of lamb. His culinary adventures were always accompanied by his infectious laughter and joy. Known for his kindness and gentle nature, he touched the lives of many people who were fortunate enough to know him.
First and foremost, important to Ron was family, Always.
We will remember Ron, our dad, our son, our brother, as the loving miracle man that he was, always in our hearts.
