Ronald Joseph Anton Gasper aged 84 years of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, passed away on Saturday, February 8th, 2025. Ron was born November 2nd, 1940, at Cudworth, SK and was raised on the farm at Bruno. He was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Agnes (Gelinski) Gasper; sister, Marjorie; his twin brother, Raymond; brothers: Gerald, Vern, and Edgar; sisters-in-law, Gertrude and Dorothy; and nephew, Bradley. Ron leaves to mourn: his wife of fifty-seven years, Elsie; children: Gordon (Lisa), James, Geoffrey (Barb), and Charles (Reann); daughter, Joanne; grandchildren: Shelby, Mercy, Zion, Jacob, Solan, and Miracle; as well as several much-loved nieces and nephews.
Ron attended St. Quentin public school a few miles “uphill both ways” from the family farm, and completed his high school in Bruno, SK. He began his working career at age seventeen by joining the staff at the Royal Bank of Canada in Bruno, a firm he would stay with for the next nine years. His postings after Bruno were to Foam Lake and Invermay, SK, Edmonton, AB, smith, AB, and lastly, to High Prairie, AB. One month after arriving in High Prairie, Ron opened the bank door one morning to let in another recently transferred employee who would later become his wife.
Ron and Elsie terminated their banking careers in August of 1967, got married, and moved to Wood Mountain, SK where Ron became the first administrator of the newly formed Rural Municipality of Old Post. In July of 1970, Ron moved his family to Marquis, SK, where he served as municipal administrator and village secretary for the next forty-five years. Ron unofficially ‘retired’ at age 65, but was rehired immediately the same day, and continued to work for another ten years.
Ron was the consummate “PR” man; if he didn’t know you when he first met you, you were both sure to be well-acquainted when you parted ways. Outings where he didn’t meet, greet, and have a chat with someone he knew were very rare indeed – noteworthy, in fact. This trait served him well for his twelve years as campaign manager and doorknocker, alongside former MLA Lyle Stewart.
Ron spent his retirement years puttering in his shop, over-seeing the remodeling of the home he came to love and was loath to leave, and of course doing lots of hunting and fishing, and visiting with friends and family. His declining health however, necessitated his need to move from Marquis to Points West Living in Moose Jaw, where he spent his last days.
The Gasper Family would like to express their deepest, heartfelt Thank You’s to Dr. K. Sanderson, the ER and Surgical Unit staff at the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital, for the exemplary care they provided. No stone was left unturned.
The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 15th, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Celebrant Dave Foley will officiate and interment will take place at a later date at St. John’s Cemetery in Marquis, SK. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Ron’s name may be made to the St. John’s Cemetery Fund, Box 54, Marquis, SK S0H 2X0.
