It is with great sadness, but also with happy memories, that we share the passing of Roger Hugh MacDonald on his 74th birthday, Friday, May 9, 2025.
Born in Kitchener and raised in Palmerston, Ontario, Roger was a devoted husband, father, teacher, and collector who lived life to its fullest.
He met his wife, Beth (Shannon) MacDonald, in Harriston, and together they raised two sons, Chris & Eleise MacDonald of Waterloo, and Mark & Hailey MacDonald of Victoria, B.C. He was the proud grandfather of Ryland and Rhodes, and brother to Gail Sullivan. Roger loved his family deeply and cherished every moment – whether at the cottage, on family trips, or sharing a rum and coke on the back deck.
Roger spent his career as an outdoor education teacher at Pine River, inspiring students with his love of nature. Over the years, he raised all kinds of animals, including raccoons, birds, squirrels, and a fox named Twitch. He also shared a special bond with his beloved border collie, Zoe – his loyal ‘buddy’ and constant companion.
An avid collector, Roger had a passion for antique telephones, pinball machines, jukeboxes, and music. He was also proud of his Newfoundland heritage – listening to Newfoundland music on weekends and travelling to their home in Brigus, NL, during the summers.
Roger will be remembered for his warmth, his humor, and the joy he found in the simple things: nature, music, and time spent with the people he loved most.
A Celebration of Roger’s life will be held at Harriston Legion on Saturday, August 23, 2025 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., with words of remembrance shared at 2:30 p.m.
Interment in Harriston Cemetery.
Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated and may be made through the Hardy-Lee Funeral Home, Harriston.
