Roger “Gerry” Williams Obituary
It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Roger Martin Gerard Luke Williams (Gerry) on Friday February 21st 2025 at the age of 59. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and partner and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Born on October 18, 1965 in Sangre Grande Trinidad, Gerry was the son of Rawle and Joan Williams. He was the first son, and fourth child born to his parents. He spent his early years in Trinidad, attended St. Martin’s Private School and Malabar RC School in Arima, then St. Mary’s College (CIC) in Port of Spain, and St. Augustine Senior Comprehensive School where he completed A Levels.
He worked with the Ministry of Health at various locations throughout the country. In 1988, he migrated to Canada and later on pursued studies in Art and Graphic Design at George Brown College. As a result of his musical abilities which became evident from an early age, with his involvement in his parish youth group at The Church of the Holy Spirit in Malabar Arima as a vocalist, he continued in that direction and became quite involved in the music scene here in Toronto. Having followed in his big sisters’ footsteps, and with their encouragement, he learned to play the acoustic guitar, and then later on, the bass guitar.
The pandemic of 2020 and ensuing loss of his job opened up a well desired opportunity to further his music industry studies and he enrolled later that year into Trebas Institute in Toronto, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in Audio Engineering and Production/DJ Arts. He also transitioned into a role as a letter carrier with Canada Post in 2022.
Music was Gerry’s true passion. He was “all in” wherever music was involved: writing his own music, producing, performing, arranging, playing the guitar and bass. He has left a lasting musical legacy at his parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel Caribbean Canadian Catholic Church (OLGC) where he served in the Music Ministry, as well as in parang groups, jazz bands, and steelpan groups. His undeniable talent and genuine spirit left a lasting impact on those with whom he interacted.
Gerry is survived by his 18-year partner in life and music Michelle, her children Gabriella (Jeremy), Mikhail (Orisha), Natassia (Marvin), Jeanne-Arlette (N’dere) and Luna-Rose and Michelle’s seven grandchildren; his father Rawle, his siblings Ian (Zaniffa) and their children Krystle, Amelia and Jameel, Wendy (Richard) and their children Jared and Annie, Dawne, Dale (David) and their children Renee (Brendan), Amanda (Dwayne), Alanna, Christopher (Jesteen) and Russell (Natalia) and 11 grandchildren, and Andrew. Gerry was predeceased by his mother Joan (nee Rudolfo).
The funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Saturday March 8, 2025 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Caribbean Canadian Catholic Church, 867 College Street in Toronto. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes to start a scholarship in Gerry’s name, to be given to a young student pursuing higher education in the field of music, as part of the OLGC’s Sr. Kathleen Jackman Scholarship awards. Donations will be collected at the funeral mass or can be made online at Archdiocese of Toronto. Direct your gift to Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Toronto. In the message, indicate Gerry Williams Scholarship Fund.
If you prefer, donations can also be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
