Obituary of Robert Thomson
It is with great grief and a massive hole in our hearts that we announce the sudden passing of a dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. Robert was a man who gave his full heart to the two daughters he loved so dearly, Lorraine and Yvonne. Family was the centre of his world and what made him smile until the last breath he took. He will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by his beloved wife of 40 years, Linda, his daughter and son-in-law Lorraine and Damion Douglass, his 6 adored grandchildren, Kayla, Jack (Devlyn), Abby, Drake, Madison, and Mya, his great-grandchild, Maverick, and his brother, Ian and sisters Lynn (Willie) and Joyce (John). He was pre-deceased and forever loved by his mom and dad (Jesse and John Thomson) and his step-son, Keith.
Robert immigrated from Newmains, Scotland in 1967 as a brave young man coming to a country he had never visited to make a life for himself and his family. He spent almost 30 years working at Procter & Gamble in Hamilton until his retirement in 1997. He later would go back to work driving the school bus in the east end of Hamilton and Stoney Creek from 2007-2023. This was his happiness for 16 years, as he would get to know his ‘kids’ from schools such as Orchard Park, Cardinal Newman, Green Acres and Mountain View. Bus driver Bob was known as Santa with his full white beard and beautiful big smile and soft laugh. Parents on the route will always remember him as the guy who showed up on time, every time.
He was a man who loved his summers at his trailer in Burk’s Falls where he could be with the nature he so loved and watch his birds until his heart was content. He shared this love with his daughter and grandchildren, who will forever love to fish, go frogging, find snakes and find crayfish (even if from time to time they were in grandpa’s pockets ready to pinch the kids who were brave enough to look). He had a beautiful voice and loved to sing out loud to all of his favourite songs. A life time sports enthusiast, he loved his golf, NFL (especially his Cowboys) and watching Linda’s Blue Jays. He was an avid card player who is currently beating several other great dad’s up there at poker. His trips to Cuba with Linda were a highlight of his retirement years. They returned to the same resort for over 20 years, and formed many friendships with his Cuban ‘second family’. A current and most recent pride for him was his designation as a Lord (of course with his Lady) because of his ownership of an (extraordinarily) small piece of land in Scotland. He had the plaque to prove it hung proudly at his door. There are no words to express our sadness, but we know we are a lucky family to have known and been so deeply loved by such a beautiful man.
Memories in our hearts today will stay, but if grief is love letting go, then we will be grieving his loss for a very long time. Robert is resting at Donald V. Brown Funeral Home awaiting a private cremation and his life will be celebrated by his close family at a later date.
