Robert James Donald Miller December 6, 1933 – April 6, 2025
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Robert James Donald Miller, a beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle at the age of 91 years.
Born on December 6, 1933 in Mattawa, Ontario, during the Depression, Bobby was the son of James Aloysius and Agnes (née Turner) Miller. He was their last surviving son.
Bobby is survived by his loving daughter Jennifer (George) and his treasured grandsons Daniel and Matthew, who were his greatest source of pride. He was also a stepfather to Carol, Ron, Kim, and is fondly remembered by his grandson and namesake, Ryan.
He will be dearly missed by his sisters Barbara, Jean (Dave), Geraldine, Deborah and Donna, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Bobby was predeceased by his parents, James and Agnes, his wife, Marilyn, his siblings Claire, John, Marion, Theresa, Leonard, Lloyd, Marlene, Henry, Gary, and Marjorie and his stepsons David, Brian, and Bill.
A heartfelt thank you to his niece Kim Cormier for her many visits and support during his time in the hospital.
At 25, Bobby proudly served his country in the Canadian Army as a member of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, stationed in Winnipeg, MB. Following his military service, he worked at 22 Wing/Canadian Forces Base in North Bay before moving to Toronto where he began a career with the Toronto Harbour Commission. Working on the water in the big city gave him a deep sense of connection to his roots in Northern Ontario.
In his later years, Bobby found his greatest joy in being a papa. He played an active role in raising his grandsons, cheering them on at hockey games, watching countless sporting events and always offering encouragement and support.
Bobby was proud of his Algonquin heritage and carried with him the small town values he learned growing up. Family was his greatest happiness and he cherished every moment spent with loved ones while passing on his wisdom, love, and quiet strength. He was known for his quick wit, sharp sense of humour and remarkable memory. Even in his final days, he vividly recalled stories from his youth and family, bringing them to life with detail.
Bobby had a great love for the outdoors, enjoying fishing and exploring the beauty of Northern Ontario. He was an avid fan of hockey and baseball and loved watching boxing and UFC matches. He also had a lifelong passion for the racetrack.
He will always be remembered for his dignity, kindness and unwavering love for those he held dear.
In accordance with Bobby’s wishes, cremation has taken place and interment of ashes will be held later at St. Mary’s Cemetery in North Bay.
A funeral service will be held at the Pro-Cathedral of the Assumption Church, 480 McIntyre Street West, North Bay, Ontario at 10:00 AM on Friday April 25th. The family invites everyone to a luncheon in the church hall immediately following the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you honour Bobby’s memory by performing a random act of kindness, continuing his legacy of love and generosity.
