Robert (Bob) Ferguson
December 24, 1929 – December 27, 2024
Bob passed away quietly at home with his family by his side. He is deeply missed by his wife of 69 years Elaine (nee Sneddon) and daughters Elizabeth McKay (Tim), Leslie Guyader (late Paul), Roberta Ferguson (Martin Reid) and Sharon Ferguson (Justin Heyworth). Bob is equally missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Lindsay McKay (Micah, Storm, and August), Garrett McKay (Jess Hanna, River, Sawyer and Violet), Christine Guyader (Chris Robinson, Ryder and Danika) and Jane Guyader (Yvan Letourneau, Olivier). Bob was predeceased by his eleven siblings, much-loved and missed grandson Dana McKay and son-in-law Paul Guyader. Bob is survived by his sister-in-law Ann Ferguson (nee Smith) (late Roy) and many nieces and nephews.
A St. James original, Bob was born and raised on Ferry Road. His first career was pedalling groceries to households around St. James. He had a brief modelling career when his elder sisters (Norah, Ruth, Nancy and Sheila) entered him in a beautiful baby contest which he won. As a teen he modelled a bicycle, among other items for Brigden’s, then producers of the Eaton’s catalogues.
Bob attended Linwood School. After finishing he and his younger brother, Roy, went into the plumbing trade apprenticing with their brother Dick and brother-in-law Bud Brodie. He enjoyed a long successful career in the plumbing trade, owning and operating his own companies, Assiniboine Plumbing and Inland Mechanical Services with Elaine.
Bob was introduced to his future wife by his younger sister, Evie, who worked at “the Phones” with Elaine. Bob was warmly welcomed into Elaine’s family and they married on October 15, 1955.
Bob’s interests were many, he was a natural athlete, enjoying a good workout, skiing and could out-run just about anyone. At the youthful age of 80 he took up curling dividing his time between Deer Lodge and Assiniboine curling clubs. Bob taught his young family to ski on the hills of Manitoba. After months of flat-land ski practice each season, he rewarded their efforts with spring break trips to Banff in the late 1970’s. Bob enjoyed camping and piloted Elaine, their four daughters and often two dogs, on many adventures in the station wagon each summer. Destinations included Yellowstone, The Great Salt Lake, and Mount Rushmore. Jasper with Uncle Roy, Auntie Ann and cousins Dean, Carol and Mark Ferguson was a particularly memorable trip. When Roy and Ann moved their family to Minaki our adventures followed them there. Elaine’s parents, (late Richard and Bessie Sneddon) owned a cottage at Grand Beach, and many happy summer holidays and weekends were enjoyed there.
Bob and Elaine enjoyed spending leisure time in the garden, Bob took immense pride and joy tending his extensive perennial beds and vegetable garden.
Bob and Elaine participated with great interest in the daily lives of their children, grand-children and great-grandchildren. They enjoyed international travel, discovering destinations together in Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia over the years. An animal-lover to his core, Bob ensured the family always had a couple of dogs and all sorts of cats over the years. Bob and Elaine expanded their animal affections in their 70’s and began Western Pleasure riding, enjoying equine companionship for several years.
Most people who knew Bob heard his big, warm laugh before they spotted him in a room. Bob had a keen wit and was never at a loss for a good-natured wise-crack or well-timed comeback. His wife and family are grateful for his long, happy life and will dearly miss his steady, humour-filled, and comforting presence in their lives.
