In loving memory of Rita Shawera (née Pépin), 94 years, who peacefully passed away early Wednesday evening, February 5th, 2025, with loving family by her side. Beloved wife of Edward Shawera (predeceased 2007). Loving mother of Julie (Dennis predeceased 1997), and Suzanne both of Sudbury, and Michelle (Rob) of Alberta. Predeceased by her beloved son, Mark in 2011. Cherished grandmother of her only granddaughter, Kelsey. Dear daughter of Alcide and Sylvia (née Bélanger) Pépin, both predeceased. She is survived by her much-loved sisters Cora Pépin, Simone Bilodeau and Marielle Poulin (Léon), and her endearing brothers Léo (Monique) and René Pépin. Beloved sister and sister- in-law of Laurette Chassé (Lucien), Lucienne Campbell (Allan), Bernadette Chassé, Alice Bujold, Tony Pépin (Ramona), Cécile (Antoinette) Valotaire, Andrée Labelle, and Anthony Shawera, Peter Shawera and Benjamin Shawera, all predeceased. Sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews, along with many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Born in Onagon, just outside of Iroquois Falls, Ontario, Rita was the third oldest of 13 children. After leaving the homestead in her younger days, she moved to Sudbury and enrolled in the RNA (Registered Nursing Assistant) program, successfully becoming one of only 8 graduates in her class. She was one of the first employees to work at the newly opened Sudbury Nursing Home (now known as Extendicare York) and finally ending her career at Regency Residence senior care home in Sudbury. She loved to travel, and enjoyed spending time at bingo or the casino, particularly in her later years.
Her devotion to her family was everlasting, as the bond of love was unwavering. It is for this, that we will always remember her and hold her dear within our hearts.
Resting at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch St., Sudbury. Friends may gather from 2-5; 7-9pm Friday, February 21, 2025. Funeral Mass at St. Jean de Brébeuf Church, 26 Kathleen St., Sudbury on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 10:30am. Interment in the family plot at the Civic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Meals on Wheels would be appreciated.
