Rita Edith Baird (Dawe)
June 15 th , 1951- March 9 th , 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rita, age 73, she passed
peacefully on March 9 th , 2025, at the Dartmouth General Hospital after a lengthy battle
with COPD. Rita was surrounded by her family and closest friends.
Rita was predeceased by her father, Arthur Dawe, the love of her life and husband
Andrew (2021) her youngest son Harry (1999, killed by a drunk driver in Brooks,
Alberta) and an infant brother (died at birth).
Rita is survived by her mother Edith Dawe (GFW, Newfoundland), son Andrew Baird
(Victoria) of Langley BC, daughter Daphne Love (Stephen) of Rockland, ON.
Grandchildren Andrew Baird (Chayan) Langley BC, Felicia McNeely (Brandon) Ottawa,
Cael Love (Rockland). Great grandchildren Summer, Chloe, Drew (Andrew) and Miley
Baird, Langley BC. Sisters Shirley Butt (Claude), Donna Freake (Woodrow), brother Bill
Dawe (Juanita), “cousin-in-law” Kelli MacKenzie (Mike) and numerous nieces and
nephews, cousins, aunts & uncles. She further leaves behind a number of very special
friends who were always there for her during her hardest days and who also shared the
best of times throughout her life.
Rita, a proud Newfoundlander, was devoted to her family and the love of her life who
she was married to for 53 years. Rita and Andrew were inseparable and could often be
found dancing at the Newfy club with their large group of friends, dining in restaurants,
pulling the arm of a slot machine at the casino or sipping fancy drinks in the warm
south.
Rita loved crafts including diamond art, puzzles and sewing, often making the
curtains that hang in the homes of many friends or knitting hats and finger puppets for
children at IWK Hospital. She loved music, trying her hand at guitar, drums and
xylophone. Rita was a storyteller and often the life of the party. She was a great sport
during the many, many years of card playing with family and friends. She was known
for going all out in her decorating and event planning, a proud woman, always dressed
impeccably and done to the 9’s for her outings with matching shoes and purse (a set for
every outfit).
She was known as Reety, Rita, nanny and mom by those who loved her and will be
forever missed.
For those wishing to make a donation in her memory, she would appreciate donations to
MADD Ottawa and Area maddchapters.ca/ottawa/giving/ .
Rita has chosen not to have a service, she has been cremated and her ashes joined
with those of her husband, eternally together.
Forever in our hearts.
