Obituary of Richard Lawrence Roach
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Richard (Rick) Roach announce his passing on April 3rd, 2025 at Hospice House in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He was surrounded by his family and lots of love during his short battle with cancer.
Rick is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra Jessop-Roach; his son, Erik (Bailey); daughter, Melanie McCashion (Ryan); his brother, Wayne (Doreen); siblings-in law, Patty, John (Kathy) and Mark (Dana) Jessop; nieces, Shelley Roach, Tara McRae, Laura McRae and Danika Heaphy; nephews, Jeff and Seth Roach, Luke, Kevin and Logan Jessop, who will all miss him dearly along with many friends and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Lawrence Roach; mother, Hilda Roach Hiscoe; step-father, Noel Hiscoe, and sister, Caroline.
Rick was a hard-working, loyal, genuine and honest man. He gave of himself and expected nothing in return. This was reflected in his work as a lawyer and involvement in his community of Oromocto. Rick served many community organizations, including being a founding member of the Oromocto Public Hospital Foundation and the Ruffed Grouse Society, a charter member of the Oromocto Rotary Club, Director and Chair of the Town’s Planning Advisory Committee, Jobstart and the Oromocto Community Residences, Director for the Oromocto Helpline and Legal Council for the Oromocto Legion Branch building reconstruction. He also served in the Office of the Judge Advocate General (reservist) for 16 years, retiring as the Atlantic Commanding Officer for reserve deputy judge advocates (Lieutenant- Colonel).
He was a man of simple pleasures. He loved to hunt and could be found out in the woods most weekends throughout the fall. He loved to share this passion with friends and family, especially with his great friend, Ron Brownridge, his son, Erik and four legged companion, Maple. In his late 50’s, he began working out at the gym and loved being a part of the Synergy family. He was never much of a singer but learned to play the djembe drum later in life and with his wife, played in the church choir and a djembe group. These groups provided him with wonderful fun and friendship. He later started playing the Cajon drum and he and Sandra would play music together at home, in special care homes with friends, and most recently at the Friday night jams at the Oromocto Legion. He had a signature “concentration face” when playing, but we promise he was having fun. He also loved basketball, probably because the Toronto Maple Leafs kept letting him down. He went to two NBA games, watched March Madness religiously with Sandra, and was so excited when the raptors won a championship.
His biggest love, of course, was for his family. He often showed this in the little gestures, such as making breakfast every morning for the family and making sure Sandra’s “to go” coffee mug was filled before she left for work. They were just shy of celebrating 39 years of marriage and recently enjoyed a bucket list trip to Ireland. Rick’s support for his children was unwavering. They fondly referred to him as Papa Roach, a nickname bestowed on him by a morning show radio host – he always made sure to call into the radio station for Erik and Melanie’s birthdays. He became manager for Erik’s basketball team and drove many of the players on trips in what they nicknamed the “Roach Runner”. He took Melanie to her 7am figure skating practices and he never missed her dance recitals.
Described by many who knew him as easy to love, kind, patient, a good friend and neighbor, he will be missed dearly but always held in our hearts.
A funeral service will be held at the Oromocto Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, April 8th, 2025 at 2:00 pm followed by a Celebration of Life from 4:00 until 8:00 pm at the Oromocto Legion Branch #93, 284 Restigouche Road, Oromocto.
Our thanks to the staff at Oromocto Public Hospital, the Emergency, Medical transition unit, 4SW and Palliative care departments of the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital and at Fredericton Hospice House. We are forever grateful for your care and compassion.
For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Fredericton, the Oromocto Legion, the Oromocto Foodbank or a charity of the donor’s choice.
