Obituary of Richard Gary MacLeod
MacLEOD, Richard Gary – Age 79, of Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co., died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, January 30, 2025, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.
Born April 14, 1945, in Port Elgin, New Brunswick, he was son of the late Alfred Allen and Eva Mary (Read) MacLeod. He grew up in Folly Lake, Nova Scotia and spent his later childhood years in Port Howe, Nova Scotia.
Gary had a diverse working career. In 1966, he began in banking where he worked for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) for 13 years. In 1979 he then purchased Hebbville French Pastries and shortly after he also opened South Shore Bulk and Natural Food Store on King Street in Bridgewater. In 1986, he decided to purchase The Blarney Stone Restaurant in Hebbs Cross. Shortly after purchasing the restaurant, he decided to close the bakery and sold the Bulk and Natural Food Store to concentrate solely on the restaurant. He continued to successfully operate the restaurant for 25 years; at which time he retired and sold it to his son Sean. Gary then retired, where he enjoyed spending his summers at the cottage in PEI. He loved the outdoors, where he would also spend his spare time, hunting and fishing.
Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Ada Elizabeth “Betty” (Conners) MacLeod; son, Sean MacLeod, wife Sarah and their children, Claire and Owen, all of Bridgewater; daughter, Beth MacLeod, Bridgewater; brother and sister-in-law, Reg and Jennifer MacLeod, Middle Sackville; nephews, Galen MacLeod, Halifax and Dave MacLeod, New Zealand.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Verna MacLeod, formerly of Oxford.
Gary’s family would like to thank the 4th Floor Medical Care Unit at South Shore Regional Hospital for the wonderful care they gave Gary during his time there. A special thank you to Dr. Chaisson for all of her care and for always taking the time to sit and talk with him.
By personal request, there will be no visitation or service at this time. No flowers please. Donations may be made to SHAID Tree Animal Shelter or the Bridgewater Inter-Church Food Bank. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater, where online condolences and messages may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com
