It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard William Stanley Bedford on March 2, 2025, at the age of 82. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Innisfil, after a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. He is now at rest.
Richard was born on October 22, 1942, to loving parents Kathleen and Edward Bedford. He was the brother to the late John Bedford and is survived by his sister, Beatrice Todd. Richard will be missed and fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, and his extended family.
Born and raised in Belleville, Richard’s work took him and his family to various towns throughout Ontario, where they forged lifelong friendships. A dedicated and hardworking individual, Richard spent 25 years as a store manager at Sears. His commitment to his work, his mentorship of others, and his positive influence on all who worked with him defined his remarkable career.
Above all, Richard was a loving and devoted family man. He shared nearly 60 years of marriage with his best friend and the love of his life, Helen Bedford. He was a proud father to Shannon, Jimmy, and Julie-Ann (Barry), and a recent grandfather to Kimberly Rose.
Richard was an incredible father, always supporting and encouraging his children’s achievements and pursuits. His kindness and warmth made everyone feel at ease, and his wonderful sense of humor and infectious smile endeared him to all who met him. Known for his big heart, gregarious nature, and lighthearted spirit, Richard made friends wherever he went. He was a generous and thoughtful friend, always checking in and offering help wherever needed, and always up for adventures – especially the cherished fishing trips.
Richard lived a happy and memorable life, touching the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He had a special love for animals and was affectionately known as the ‘animal whisperer.’ He enjoyed ski trips, family road trips and travel, skating along the Rideau Canal, cottage life, and skidoo adventures (often with a stop at Snyder’s along the way). Christmas celebrations, surrounded by decorations that rivaled the Griswold’s, were a highlight for family.
Richard’s legacy will live on through the love of his family, the memories he created, and the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.
A Celebration of Life to follow at a date and time to be announced.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County.
