Rene was born and raised in Huntsville. Her parents were Alfred Holinshead and Mary Findlay. Her siblings were Wesley Holinshead, Ruby Winterbottom (Lloyd), and David Holinshead, all predeceased.
Rene attended the Stone School House on West Road, Huntsville High School and the Canada Business School in Toronto. She trained in Secretarial / Book-keeping. While attending school in Toronto, she met Paul Tanner. Their marriage of 63 years began in Huntsville on October 1st, 1955. Their love for family and the country brought them back to Huntsville in 1960, where they began building their forever home and raising their family on the Holinshead property.
Together they had three daughters; Patricia Boothby (Richard Keay), the late Donna Tanner (Barry Hineman), Catherine “Kate” Tanner (d. Tim Brush). As well as seven grandchildren; Kristopher Boothby (Nancy Grant), Shannan Boothby (Raymond Gustoskie), Jessica Hineman (Ted Steengaard), Daniel Hineman, Sara Hineman (Steven McGrady), Miles Brush (Judy Johnson), Shalena Brush (Donald Hall-Malloy), and six great-grandchildren; Savannah Boothby, Kolton Boothby, Travis Boothby, Ethan Boothby, Dax Brush and Zara Brush.
Aside from working, Paul and Rene had a hobby farm complete with many animals, amazing flower gardens and a large vegetable garden. Rene enjoyed pickling the harvest each fall. In the Spring, the children, Alfred and Rene would spend hours making maple syrup in the Sugar Shack.
Family, friends and holidays were important to Rene. She made each holiday special with pumpkin carvings, corn roasts, Christmas cookies, butter tarts and many family gatherings. She would also make dandelion wine, root beer, ice cream and many baked goods from scratch.
Paul and Rene had a love of traveling, they often went to Florida but also took vacations to Arizona, the Dominican and Nova Scotia. They enjoyed traveling locally to visit family and friends.
Rene had many talents and was very creative. She started her first business teaching ceramics. Later, along with Paul, they opened Leisure Time Pool and Spa, which they ran until retirement. Rene was always busy with cross-stitching, knitting and crocheting. Her love of quilting was apparent as she gifted many quilts to family members. Rene also made several beautiful quilts with the guild she belonged to, with dozens of them being donated to Huntsville Hospice.
Rene enjoyed her later years sitting on the porch with a cup of tea watching the birds, admiring her flowers and feeding the chipmunks. The evenings were spent watching Wheel of Fortune while she had her cat Ginger on her lap.
Rene lovingly appreciated the special visits, friendships and kindness from Lorrie McColl (niece), Terry Joiner (life-long friend), Lynn King (hairdresser and caring friend), Mary-Ann and Dan Lupton (life-long friend and travel companions), Fran and Wayne Higgs (d.), Faye and Jessie Rhiness (d.), Bernice Smith (d.), Alfred and Betz Montipetit and many friends she met through her numerous endeavors.
Rene was the family historian and her memory was superb. She has left us all with so many memories. Rene took great pride in the life they had created. She knew what was truly important in life ….. FAMILY.
TJ, what a exceptional friend you have been. Rene enjoyed the many visits for tea and treats. A special thank you for all you have done for Rene and Paul. We can’t express our gratitude enough for always being there and all you have done. What a wonderful friend you are.
A special thank you to Lorrie from Kate and Shalena, for all the time and moral support she gave Rene, Kate and Shalena in the last few months of Rene’s life. No words can express what a exceptional friend, niece and cousin you were and always will be.
If desired, donations to Muskoka Seniors at muskokaseniors.org or the OSPCA would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. A private burial will take place in the Spring.
A celebration of life will take place on Sunday, April 6, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Active Living Centre.
