Renata Gloria Bruce
It is with immense sadness that we announce the untimely passing of Renata Gloria Bruce, long time resident of Shuniah ON, on April 14, 2025 after spending one last birthday surrounded by her family.
Renata was born April 14 1961 as an only child to Joanne and Olimpio Sonego, both hardworking immigrants from Azzano Decimo, Italy.
Renata attended Westgate High School, where she met her high school sweetheart, and loving husband of almost 41 years, Bill Bruce. They were together 10 years prior to marrying July 20, 1984. Shortly after marriage they began to build their dream home on the shores of Lake Superior, where they would raise two daughters. Their love for each other was unbreakable as they took turns taking care of each other as they both endured multiple health complications; a true testament to their vows “in sickness and in health”.
Renata was a remarkable woman with a heart of gold. She had the ability to make everyone feel special and brought magic to every holiday, birthday and gathering. She would always lend a helping hand and went beyond the call of duty for her family and friends. Taking care of her family and raising her daughters was her passion; she put in every ounce of love imaginable to make the people around her feel loved. She had many great friendships, often turning friends into chosen family.
In the early years Renata spent many hours with her daughters watching them grow. She introduced them to many hobbies that she was passionate about: sewing, crafting, cooking and spending time outside skating, sliding, swimming, camping, gardening and hiking. She was an amazing cook and poured her heart into making the most extravagant family dinners. A woman of many talents, she loved to craft and gifted many people with beautifully painted ceramic ornaments, stained glass, woodwork and homemade gifts. Everything she did, she did with her whole heart.
Lover of simple moments in life, she found joy in watching a good thunderstorm from her sunroom windows, seeing rainbows form after each storm and experiencing the excitement of seeing the first robin each spring. Her pure heart, kindness and undeniable lust for life will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Renata never missed a beat. She was always there for everyone in her life. Rain or shine, happy or sad, she was there. She was the heart of our family and our rock; always offering words of encouragement or thoughtful gestures to let us know she was thinking of us. As her daughters grew up, she remained a constant in their lives. Always their first “Good Morning” text, “Merry Christmas” call and “Happy Birthday” stream of emojis. She kept us on our toes with her silly humour and punctual greetings. To say our spark is missing would be an understatement. She was our super mom. She believed we could do anything we put our minds to and supported us wholeheartedly. As she would always say, “You learn something new everyday” and “Settle” (every time we got worked up) – these words have never been more true.
She is survived by her loving husband and best friend Bill Bruce, her two daughters Tamara (James Massaro) and Marissa Bruce. Also by her two adoring fur babies Emerson and Leo; brother in law Allan Bruce (Karen); Niece Vanessa (Kris); Nephew Trevor Bruce (Leanne); special friend Carolyn Garrity (Bob) and many more too numerous to name.
Renata is predeceased by her parents (Joanne and Olimpio), in-laws (Grace and Allan ) and a very special dog, Abby (along with many other fur friends).
A special thanks to the St.Joes hospice nurses for your kindness and compassion.
At her request, no funeral service will be held. Please think of her every time you see a hummingbird (she loved those little guys). Should you desire, donations can be made in her memory to Northern Critters in Need.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
Renata will forever be missed and always remembered. Love ya.
“Love you yesterday,
Love you still,
Always have,
Always will”
