Phoebe Doreen Porter
Albert Bridge
It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Phoebe Doreen Porter on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at her residence after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family
Phoebe was born in Sydney on October 9, 1934, the daughter of the late Walter and Sadie (Bradbury) Butler.
She was a life-long member of the Salvation Army.
Phoebe is survived by her sons, Donnie (Margie Babineau), Albert Bridge and Kevin (Patricia), Smith’s Falls, ON; daughters, Brenda Patrick, Sydney, Janice (Georgie) Porter, Seafoam, NS and Shauna (Kevin) LeBlanc, Lexington, South Carolina; daughter-in-law, Denise Porter, Sydney; sister, Alice (Frank) Rideout, Oakville, ON; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Porter; son Robert “Bob” Porter; great-granddaughter, Jenna; two brothers and one sister in infancy; brother, Clarence; and sisters, Irene Cottiers, Sadie Ells, Dorothy Manuge, Olive Sheppard and Elizabeth “Fanny” Musgrave.
Mom worked for MT&T for 40 years and together with Dad raised six children while also being very active playing softball (The Dungaree Dolls), curling, bowling, shuffleboard and darts. Weekends going to dances or playing cards with many friends and family. She volunteered for many events with the Telephone Pioneers of America. She enjoyed jigging mackerel and having her first lobster of the season sitting on the beach with a glass of wine.
Mom had very special friends in her life who kept in close contact with her, which Mom valued deeply. Shirley Wludyka who had hours-long conversations every Monday night, her sister, Alice who called every week and sent her cards weekly, her neighbor, Susan Holland who Mom thought of as another daughter and her hairdresser, Joe Stevens who said, Phoebe was his favorite old bag and we think Mom loved him for that statement alone.
Mom will be sadly missed for her laughs, hugs and her parting gifts.
Visitation will be held at The Salvation Army Sydney Community Church on Thursday, February 27th from 4-7pm. Funeral service will be held at The Salvation Army Sydney Community Church on Friday, February 28th at 11 am with Lieutenants Dion and Janelle Durdle officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Palliative Care, the VON, or The Salvation Army Sydney Community Church.
