Peter Werbeski Obituary
Peter is survived by his wife Margaret ‘Terri’ Theresa, daughter Dawna and sisters Lori and Doreen. He joined Richard, Fred, Kim and Alice.
In the early hours of January 29th, Dad checked into Hillbilly Heaven, as he would have put it. Merle Haggard played within earshot, lulling him towards the gentle pull of peace and long missed family members and friends. As a young man he joined the Canadian Air Force, finally rounding out his military career as a sergeant, after twenty-five years of service.
The second chapter of his career unfolded in Fernie, BC. Peter and Terri chose to settle where good friends with similar interests seemed to be having a good life. There, Dad filled a similar position of service in the mining industry with Crowsnest Resources. With his propensity for quality workmanship and ethics, company gifts like a tasteful barometer or stylish clock awarded for standards of safety would often appear on our fireplace mantle.
Never wanting for much, my Dad was the most generous man I know. In his way of genuinely caring, he spoke frankly, without missing an opportunity to tack on a little slapstick humour. Rod and reel in hand knee-deep in a lake or combing the brush for game with his scope and rifle, the wilderness fed his soul. Mom and Dad loved camping and over the years their RVs mimicked the typical tendency you see with home ownership. They started small with a Scamp trailer, eventually moving up to a Skylark equipped with a shower and oven, finally downsizing to a nice fibreglass camper. Across Canada, visiting almost every province, Dad navigated the highways to some of the most scenic camping locations. As you’d expect, the tape deck played many of the oldies but goodies: ’King of the Road’ Roger Miller, Charlie Pride, Patsy Cline and the like.
I’ll not forget the time he carved a barbed hook out of a fly fisherman’s scalp in the middle of Whiskey Rapids. Or when having his own fun out in the back-country, he used his winch to rescue a Jeep out of a serious mud bog. For kicks he’d join the trucker chatter on his CB radio; ‘The Polish Prince’ was his handle. Dad got a charge out of taking visiting friends, especially ones from the city, four-wheeling up the back roads of Fernie for a nice picnic at an old apple orchard. Often he’d organize sled parties, gathering up snowmobiling or hunting buddies, which always included roasting his deer sausages on big bonfires.
Born into a family of seven, Dad’s parents emigrated from Kyiv, Ukraine to Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba. They definitely didn’t have it easy back then. With the untimely loss of their parents, Dad worked hard with his siblings to stay together until a decent age, eventually ending up in New Westminster, BC.
Having decided the Armed Forces could offer a better life, he eventually crossed paths and married my mother Terri who also served at the time. For most, the Air Force resembled a gypsy lifestyle. Mom and Dad saw this as an opportunity to travel, not far or extravagantly, yet making the most of their position.
From a stint in Germany to the frigid beauty of the Arctic, Dad embraced each station. Occasionally he would send home stunning photos of a visiting fox or northern lights sparkling in the frosty night. Not shy of hard work and long hours, often taking on two jobs, he built a secure life for our family of three. A man of simple, honest values, he managed to sidestep the worst of bad luck and acquire basic good fortune that he enjoyed sharing with loved ones. Dad lived out his years with my mom surrounded by the beauty of Summerland, BC.
Keep the best memories close to your heart.
A mass will be held for him on Friday Feb.14th at the Holy Child Catholic Church in Summerland at 11 am.
