A Life Well Lived: Peter William Mantrop
Heaven needed an experienced altar boy and a hard-charging left winger, and our Dad, as always, answered the call. Peter William Mantrop, of Collingwood, Ontario passed away peacefully on Sunday 13 April.
Dad was born 27 May 1944 in Victoria, British Columbia, the only boy to his father, William and mother, Mary Francis, who declared Peter to be ‘the most beautiful blue-eyed child you’ve ever seen’. It was a proclamation she stuck to despite having three ravishing daughters, Elizabeth (Brian), Joy (Jamie), and Joan (John) – and the many top-quartile grandchildren who followed.
Raised in Gananoque, Ontario, Peter thrived at the sports that would become so essential for him: golf, baseball, football, water skiing, boating, and especially hockey – his talent for which would take him to St. Michael’s in Toronto, and Colgate College in Hamilton, NY. In fact, we were told as children that it was his bulging hockey scrapbook that first attracted the mother of his children, and fellow athlete, Ardene. Accounts vary.
Like many in his family he was called to teaching, and the Ottawa Valley, where his first two boys, Paul and Chris, were born. A move to Texas Instruments would take him to Cambridge/ KW (where third son Robert was born), Calgary, Newmarket (where fourth son, Stephen came along), and Texas. Eventually, it was back in Newmarket where he and Ardene raised the children with the same faith in the church, love of travel, and sports that continues to shape his family’s life.
In his late forties, Peter met Jean McKague. They both fell for Collingwood, Ontario. Here Jean and ‘Peter the Greeter’ would build and run Country Landing, a country store that became a happy meeting place and last-minute Christmas Eve shopping sanctuary.
It was also in Collingwood that Dad really indulged his true north star: friends and family. His love of sports and relentless support spread to another generation. Now grandkids could enjoy the same ‘no game too far, no league too rural, no event too minor’ ethos that his own boys were raised on.
And it’s that spirit that will be the tenacious winger’s most beautiful and lasting goal: putting family and friends first, travelling any distance, disregarding any impediment, just to be there, just to be with us, whenever we needed him.
Peter is predeceased by his father, William, his mother Mary, and his sister Elizabeth. He is survived by Jean McKague, his sisters, Joy (Jamie), Joan (John), his sons Paul, Chris, Rob (Leah), Steve (Sarah), and his many beloved grandchildren, William, Stella, Claire, Hayes, Clayton, Molly, Mick, Marley, Jordan, Patrick, and Leo.
A service will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, April 22nd at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 63 Elgin St, Collingwood, ON.
