Peter James Burnett Obituary
It is with sad hearts that we share the news of the passing of Peter James Burnett. Peter passed away on Sunday evening March 2nd, 2025 at his home in Port Colborne, Ontario surrounded by his family. Born in Niagara Falls Ontario on September 30th, 1951 he was the son of the late Robert (Bob) Burnett and June Godkin (Burnett).
Peter is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Kathleen Burnett (Prevost), his two children O.J. Burnett (Cynthia) of Fredericton NB, and Swiska Gotfryd (Marcin) of Welland ON. He is also survived by his pride and joy four grandchildren Oliver and Madeline Burnett, and Zofia and Emilia Gotfryd. Peter was the oldest of three siblings and will be sadly missed by his sister Anne Cooper (Peter) of Cambridge ON, and his brother John Burnett (Patricia) of Ottawa ON. Peter will also be missed by his nephews and nieces.
Peter worked for many years with Alcan Canada and later taught high school for the Niagara Catholic School Board. Most recently, Peter retired from teaching at Lakeshore Catholic High School in Port Colborne.
To say Peter had a passion for military history would be an understatement. His collection of military books, artwork and models is extraordinary and something he took a lot of pride in. Peter loved to share his knowledge on this subject and could talk for hours to anyone who would listen.
Peter loved sports and always enjoyed chatting about his favourite teams (Boston Red Sox, Toronto Maple Leafs and Cleveland Browns). He enjoyed Saturday afternoons in the fall watching his favourite college football teams and couldn’t wait for the start of baseball season each spring.
Peter’s area of expertise in sports was Football and he coached many high school teams throughout the years. Most recently he coached with the Lakeshore Catholic Gators and the Fredericton High School Black Kats.
Peter and Kathleen had a love for Golden Retrievers and had many over the years. These past years, Peter would often be seen taking short walks around the neighbourhood with his current golden retriever Pippa. Pippa was a loyal companion to Peter and always stayed close by till the end.
We would like to wish a sincere thank you to Dr. Manser, nurse Crystal, St. Elizabeth’s PSWs especially Kelsey and Jordyn, and to the staff at VON for their support over Peter’s final few months. Your help and guidance allowed us to honor Peter’s wishes and keep him home and comfortable throughout his illness. The staff went above and beyond and his family are very grateful.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.
The Burnett family will receive friends at the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Friday March 7, 2025 from 4 p.m-6 p.m.
If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
