Pauline’s Obituary
Regretfully the family of Pauline Ann Slauenwhite (nee Barteaux) must announce her passing on the 21st of February 2025 after a brief respiratory illness. She died at home, as was her steadfast wish with her “Little Animals”, Maggie and Billy. Pauline was born in Bridgetown to Robert “Lindsay” and Faye (Taylor) Barteaux. She was a toddler when her father left for the war effort, returning to his family as a stranger to her when she was five. Her mother, Faye, suffered from chronic illness with Pauline sharing her care. She was incredibly matter of fact when she recounted on those times of sacrifice.
Pauline became a registered nurse at the Victoria General Hospital in 1959 and she still often reflected on her time in “Training” as being a remarkably challenging endeavour to have survived. She worked for many years at Mountain Lea Lodge. She was a dedicated carer.
Pauline married her high school love, Paul, in 1960 and they had three children, Stephen (Robin), Mark (Katia), and Dawn (Ted) Giles. Paul and Pauline enjoyed travelling, as a family and as a couple, mostly in their truck camper in later years. She missed this more than anything after Paul’s passing on the 17th of February, 14 years ago.
She was very proud of all her children and grandchildren who share the same adventurous spirit, living at times across North America, South America, New Zealand and Europe. She loved getting updates from her grandchildren, step grandchildren and great step grandkids on all their activities, regardless of the distances that separated them from her. She was quite proud of her support of her many family members serving in the Canadian military from her father, uncles, son in law, grandsons, and step grandsons.
Many thanks to Laura Hall for her care and companionship over the past year. Pauline always looked forward to her Tuesday afternoons.
As per Pauline’s wishes cremation has occurred and a graveside remembrance will happen later when her far flung family are able to gather in the warmth and sunshine to celebrate her life.
To honour her memory, give your furry friend a hug, donate to a worthy charity, or enjoy the waves on the bay.
