Paul Stephen Lakin FCPA, FCA
June 10, 1944 – March 8, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that the family of Paul Lakin announces he died peacefully March 8, 2025, at the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice after a brief illness.
Paul loved life and lived it fully. He was a connector, family man, friend, volunteer, golfer, curler, lifelong learner, and an inspiring role model to many. Paul’s impetuous nature always kept us guessing.
After graduating from McMaster University in 1968, Paul began his professional career training as a chartered accountant with Ernst & Whinney (one of the several firms merging to become KPMG). After earning his CA designation, he specialized in taxation, becoming a partner in the firm in 1978.
Always looking to learn new things, Paul switched careers in 1990 to work in the pension benefits area first with Manulife Financial and then Standard Life. On the move again in 2005, he focused on business development with KPMG, TD Canada Trust and then First Ontario Credit Union until his retirement in 2022. Looking back, he realized his whole career had been in building relationships, in his work, the community or neighborhood.
As a young CA, Paul was coached by his mentors that, as a professional, he had a responsibility to contribute to the community. He took this to heart and volunteered his services in many organizations over the next 53 years, often in a leadership role: Big Brothers, Crime Stoppers, YMCA, Friends of HMCS Haida, Dr Bob Kemp Hospice, Hamilton Bulldogs Foundation, Rygiel Housing, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Bay Area Health Trust, Hamilton Halton Junior Golf Association, Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair, LiON’S LAIR, and Theatre Aquarius. He was an avid Tigercat fan and member of the TigerCat Town Counsel. He was also a 37 year member of the Rotary Club of Hamilton AM whose members provided exceptional support to Paul and the family over these past months.
He also mentored many young McMaster and Brock grads in their journey to become Chartered Accountants. He was very proud of their successful accomplishments over the years, and several remain grateful to Paul for his help getting them launched in their careers. For all his service to the community and the profession, Paul was honoured in 2020 to be named a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants.
He was a long-time member of Burlington Golf and Country Club as a golfer and recently, also a curler. He valued the friendships he made through BGCC. Some of those friends led him to join the Probus Club Burlington Lakeshore.
He loved his family, his work, his friends and colleagues, his community and city.
He is survived by Pamela (nee Ricketts), his loving wife of over 51 years, his cherished daughters, Courtney Pedersen-Lakin (Dane) and Kathryn (Jason) Gowland and four grandchildren whom he adored.
Dear brother and brother-in-law of Peter Lakin (Robert Nelder) and Michael Lakin (Kate Turney), Susan (the late David) Ricketts, Peter (Fran) Ricketts, Debbie (Barry) Wagdin and Tim (the late Leah) Ricketts.
Paul leaves a large extended family of many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, cousins and other family members, friends and colleagues too many to name.
Predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Sarah (Ormerod),
Aquamation has taken place. A visitation will be held Thurs March 20 at Circle of Life from 1 – 4 and 6 – 8 pm.
A celebration of Paul’s life will be held April 13. If you would like to attend, please send an email to paul.lakin.2025@gmail.com and details will be provided when finalized.
If desired, in lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice.
