Paul passed away peacefully at Windsor’s Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital at the age of 78. He was the son of the late Stan and Vivian Carter, and was predeceased by his first wife Claudia (neé Forteski) in 1994, and his second wife Bonnie (neé Lewis) in 2015. He is survived by daughter Crystal (Frank), son Matthew (Amy), step-daughter Melissa Atkin (Heather), and step-son Sean Atkin (Lisa). Paul leaves behind grandchildren Olivia and Nicolas, and step-grandchildren Maxwell, George and Harvey. He will be missed by brother Phil (Muriel),niece Emma (Joe), nephew Garrin (Nicole), and by many relatives and friends.
Paul’s first love, in addition to his passion for golf was working in nature as a Conservation Officer in Ontario’s Department of Lands and Forests. This took him throughout Northern Ontario, including the town of Foleyet where he met and married Claudia. Following Ontario’s significant Dept. of Lands and Forests cutbacks, Paul worked in teams fighting forest fires in Northwestern Ontario, after which he relocated to Es County for work as a custodian at a number of county schools. After a time, he subsequently met and married Bonnie, and eventually retired after working at the Kingsville District High School.
The family particularly remembers Paul for his easy going gentleness, love of family, socializing, and never complaining when the going would sometimes get tough. The family thanks ICU and CCU doctors and staff at Hotel-Dieu for their valiant efforts throughout Paul’s final days, and to the staff at Kingsville’s Southgate Village retirement home for providing comfort and care throughout Paul’s final years. And a special thanks to friend Berry Pettapiece for his countless visits and car rides, to their many lunches together; that Paul clearly enjoyed.
Paul was cremated at Kingsville’s Kendrick Funeral Home. A Celebration-Of-Life will be held at a location and date that are yet to be determined. Condolences, cards and messages may be directed to the Funeral Home. Donations in Paul’s name may be made to the Ontario Wildlife Foundation, or Hotel-Dieu’s ICU and CCU departments, or a charity of your choice.
