Patrick Morgan Coukell
March 17th, 1950 – January 27th, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family of Patrick Coukell announce his passing on January 27th 2025 at the age of 74yrs. A beloved husband, stepfather, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend to all who knew and loved him. You will no doubt be greatly missed.
Patrick, or (just Pat) as he insisted on being called, was born March 17th, 1950, in Chilliwack, British Columbia where he was raised by his parents, Cecile and Elizabeth Coukell, with his beloved sister, Esther, and his brother, Dennis. His family had a military background with his father serving as a soldier In the United States Army during World War ll. His mother, Elizabeth Coukell drove the Red Cross ambulance during the same war. Following along in their footsteps, Patrick joined the US Army quickly rising to the rank of Lieutenant in the Vietnam War. He was captured and spent considerable time as a POW by the Viet Cong. By the grace of God, his life was spared and he managed to escape captivity and find his way back to his platoon. He was later awarded “The Purple Heart,” by the United States government in recognition of his outstanding bravery and sacrifice in the line of duty by refusing to give away the coordinates of his platoon to his captors. As a result of the time he had spent in captivity, he endured untold suffering and trauma. After his deployment he was flown home to recuperate.
Years later he met and married Shirley Brothers in Fort McMurray and the two became one. Pat also enjoyed all children and chatted freely with them about dares he did as a kid and other stories. He especially loved his three grandkids, Rachael, Emily, and Maxwell when they came to visit. He had a great sense of humor and was kind-natured and generous toward all that knew him. As a young boy He loved animals, fishing with his uncle, and nature. He had a paper route right on the Canada/US border and would deliver newspapers to the US saving his money for trips and special ventures. He was a man of very few words yet his compassionate heart and warm personality spoke volumes. His favorite saying was “still waters run deep.” He will be forever remembered and dearly loved by his family, circle of friends, and church community. On January 27th ,2025 God called him home. His pain and suffering have all ended now, and he is rejoicing in the presence of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, in Heaven for all eternity! Free at last!
2 Corinthians 5/8
