Patricia Jane Copeland
November 6, 1935 – March 7, 2025
Patricia “Jane” Copeland was born and raised in Etobicoke, ON, daughter of Viola & Roy Rutherford, and sister to Mary (Gardiner). She attended Runnymede and St. Clement’s schools and U of Toronto for physiotherapy, which she practiced for several years.
Jane married Chuck (Charles) Copeland in 1962 and they lived in an apartment above Copeland Lumber in Milton until their house on Martin Street was built. It was in this house where they raised their four children, and almost always had a Brittany spaniel in the mix. Summer, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays were spent at their old log cabin on Oxtongue Lake. Later, a remote boat-access cabin was their refuge of choice for many years. Jane and Chuck also enjoyed many off-the-beaten-path travel adventures together.
Jane has been described as being incredibly kind, caring, and generous. She maintained a great sense of humour, a positive outlook on life, and she loved to laugh. She will be dearly missed by her many friends and by her children Paul (Sherri), Ian (Charmaine), Karen (Justin), and her grandchildren Hanna, Ayla, Molly, Neil and Téo. She was predeceased by her husband Chuck (2009) and daughter Lynn (2023).
Jane’s recent years were spent enjoying many hours in her sunroom watching the trees and wildlife of her backyard nature sanctuary, walking, reading, and visiting with friends, neighbours and family. She was very grateful for her life and all the people who were part of it. We are so thankful for the incredible care, kindness and friendship of PSW’s Karen Tawse and Luis Valdez and of her son Ian, all of whom made possible Mom’s wish to stay in her home until the end. We would also like to thank her many friends and neighbours who came for visits and walks, brought her food and helped in times of need. Jane really appreciated all of you.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of Jane’s favourite charities in her memory: Milton District Hospital, Townsend Smith Foundation, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Environmental Defense or the David Suzuki Foundation. Another option is Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (donations will be directed to the heart function clinic), where Jane received exceptional life-extending care.
