Ottilia Colwell (Jaffe) Obituary
After 98 years on this side of reality, Ottilia left us to carry on in another plane of existence. She will be forever in our hearts and remembered as a loving Mom and Omi.
She was predeceased by her three sisters Theresa and Marie, in Germany, and Anna in Canada. She leaves behind her son Henry (Jean); daughter Anne (Don); grandkids Sarah, Billie, Ian, Ellie and Leah; and great-grandsons Vincent and Dax; as well as her niece Gabrielle, and nephew Andi, in Germany.
Ottilia was born and raised in Southern Germany and came to Canada with her baby son, Henry, to start a new life with her husband, Henry. Anne arrived on the scene soon afterwards, and the Jaffe family was all set to make a life in Edmonton.
Mom started working after Henry and Anne started school. She rose up the ranks from a chambermaid at the MacDonald Hotel to the executive housekeeper at the Chateau Lacombe Hotel. While there, she received many awards for the high level of standards she aspired to.
Upon retiring, she and Henry settled at Pigeon Lake. They built a house, with the help of their children, and continued to develop the land to include numerous flower gardens and a very large and productive vegetable garden. Along with the chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys there was always a bounty that was shared with us all.
The grandkids loved visiting Omi and Opa and spending time in the chicken coop, picking berries, swimming, having campfires, and exploring nature.
After 50 years of marriage to Henry, Mom found herself alone at the lake. But soon another love in her life appeared. At 80 Mom married Cecil and they had a wonderful 12 years together, first living in Wetaskiwin and then moving to Seasons Retirement Community when their health waned. Together they travelled as much as possible. One of Mom’s highlights was being able to take Cecil to see her childhood home in Germany. Cecil introduced her to his community in Wetaskiwin, and she felt so much love from the people in their church and Cecil’s family.
We’ll forever remember her incredible smile and how she was always ready with a laugh and a kind word.
She took great joy in her grandkids and spoiled them with lots of homemade goodies. Her nockerln soup was staple fare when the kids came for lunch.
A private family memorial will be held in the summer. In lieu of flowers memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Alzheimer Society Alberta, Arthritis Society Canada, or any charity of your choice.
