Olive “Ollie”‘s Obituary
It is with great sadness the family of Olive “Ollie” Veal (nee Boyko) announce her peaceful passing on Monday February 24th 2025, at the age of 84. She was surrounded with loved ones by her side.
Born June 17, 1940 in Red Lake, Ollie happily spent all of her 84 years in the Red Lake-Madsen area. She attended the Red Lake District High School, graduating from Grade 11 in the spring of 1957. That fall she made her way to Winnipeg where she furthered her education at Success Business School. Then returning to marry Don in in 1958.
Ollie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Sonja(Ray),children Kirk, Karen(Peppi), Kim (Kurt), grandchildren Burgundy(Brent), Jasmin(Chris), Kyle (Calli), Jackson(Silean), Ryley(Lindsey);great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Taylor, Deven, Ashton and Heidi Lee Olive and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her one great love, Don and her parents Michael and Myrtle Boyko.
She was hard working and an entrepreneur, a trait that was passed on to her children. Her employment always encompassed serving the public. She was employed by the Okanski’s at the P&M What Not Shop, eventually purchasing it and operated it as Ollie’s Variety. Her other employment included Nicks Taxi, Red Lake Shoe Store, Plaza Video and IGA.
Ollies greatest passion was family gatherings, a tradition that will carry on for years to come. She was incredibly proud of her children and their families. She was the biggest cheerleader and the number one fan to all her grandchildren and relished in all of their accomplishments.
She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Curling Club and cherished the Ladies Bonspiel with the elaborate costumes being an all time favorite.
She never turned down a trip to a casino or an opportunity for Bingo. You could often find her at the ball field, arena, local coffee shop or adventuring with her fellow Red Hatters. She was extremely social and would not want to miss any event.
Knitting was always part of her recreational agenda and many of her creations are still proudly held my family members. She was an expert at all things word search related, puzzles, and would battle you in any card or scrabble game. Her enthusiasm for scratch tickets made her a favourite customer of the OLG.
She may have been only 5’1 but was packed full of love, quick wit and always shared a smile and a twinkle in her eye with others. She was deeply devoted to her community and adored every interaction and conversation she had with so many.
The celebration of life will be held on Friday, February 28th at 7 PM at the Red Lake Royal Canadian Legion branch 102. A private internment will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital Foundation or Auxiliary through the Red Lake Chapel Box 239 Red Lake, Ontario P0V2MO
