Olive Mae Cerniuk (née Plummer), age 78 and originally from Guelph, passed away peacefully on February 6 at Sakura House Hospice in Woodstock.
Olive is preceded in death by her parents, Beth and Fraser, brothers Carl and Bob, and soulmate, Larry. She is survived by her daughter, Lori (Dave) Cheyne, three grandchildren, Avori (Chris), Olivia (Brad) and Hunter (Kaeleigh), as well as five great-grandchildren, Olive, Phya, Booker, Palmer and Kipp. She will also be dearly missed by best friends, Trudy and Dave, and her dog, Bear.
Olive focused much of her life on family, doting on her three grandchildren and being an active part of their lives. She went on field trips, chauffeured between school and social outings, hosted sleepovers and joined in on vacations. She affectionately became known as “Granny O” to many others who met her through her grandchildren’s extracurriculars. Granny O would often be seen (and heard) at Hunter’s hockey games, moving to opposite sides of the rink when he switched ends after every period as the team’s goalie. Her chair was always the furthest down the fence line during Avori and Olivia’s baseball games so she could cheer (and heckle) without interruption.
Olive often said her greatest gift was her grandchildren, being even more proud as they welcomed their own little ones. She cherished the baby snuggles and many “firsts” with the fourth generation of her family in recent years.
Olive enjoyed a vibrant social life. She was surrounded by dear friends who made sure to celebrate every occasion. Olive was famous for adorning herself in ridiculous costumes to add to the fun. She loved playing cards, dancing, reading, swimming on a hot day, baking and watching the Maple Leafs. All things she enjoyed until the end of her beautiful life.
Olive was known for her playful, caring nature. She always cheered the loudest. Hugged the biggest. Danced the longest. Loved the deepest. Her quick wit and unmatchable sense of humour, combined with her honesty and compassionate heart will be deeply missed. She radiated light throughout her life – a beacon of positivity and strength for all those who knew and loved her.
In true form, Olive’s Celebration of Life will be a party at the Woodstock Legion on Sunday, February 16, 2025 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Costumes are encouraged! It will be a time for friends and loved ones to gather and honour her remarkable legacy.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sakura House Hospice. This incredible place supported Olive to die with dignity, on her own terms. Its team of dedicated staff and volunteers provided exceptional care and comfort to Olive and her family during her final weeks — a gift for which they will be forever grateful.
