BALCOM, Olga Marie ~ age 94 of Nictaux, NS passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 20, 2025, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville surrounded by her loving family. Born in Bloomington, NS she was a daughter of the late Frank and Minnie (Uhlman) Conant. Olga attended school in Bloomington and has lived in the area all her life. She has had a variety of jobs including working at summer camps, the Mid Valley Motel and the Willowdale Motel. Olga went to work at the age of 15, babysitting for local people. She eventually was employed by the Department of Lands and Forest, sorting and tagging trees. She was a past member of the Nictaux Firettes for at least 27 years and a long-time supporter of the Nictaux Fire Department. Olga was an avid bingo player, loved gardening, cooking and enjoyed square dancing and playing cards at the Nictaux Fire Hall with her husband Chester. She devoted her life to raising her family and is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Olga is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Ann (Gary) Gates, Nictaux; Patricia Elliott, Spa Springs; Cynthia (Eddy) Porter, Nictaux; sons, David (Diane) Balcom; Michael (Wendy) Balcom; Keith (Nicole) Balcom all of Nictaux; grandchildren, Kathy (Greg) Sabean, Gates Mountain; Lisa (Terry) Taylor, North Williamston; Randy (Shelby) Whynot, Bridgewater; Jennifer Whynot (Philip Dukeshire), Middleton; Nicole (Dan) MacKinnon, Wilmot; Angie (Keith) Boudreau, Lily Lake; Eric Balcom (Christiane Theriault), Dartmouth; Dominque (Chris) Roy, Lockeport; Travis Porter, Nictaux; Tiffani Balcom (Travis), Nictaux; Kris (Sarah) Balcom, Winnipeg; Charlotte (David) Bower, Victoria Vale; Jeanette Elliott-Dowling (Michael), Meadowvale; Lisa LeClair (Terry), Wilmot; Patrick LeClair, Annapolis; great grandchildren, Chelsey (Riley) Mullins, Gates Mountain; Dylan Taylor (Larah), Beaverbank; Melanie Whynot, Kentville; Owen Fremeau, Middleton; Gabe Bower (Lauren), Lower Sackville; Kyle Snider, Bridgewater; Andus MacKinnon, Wilmot; Martina MacKinnon (James Bush), Wilmot; Tajia (Mike) Howard, Halifax; Jordan (Jade) Boudreau, Lily Lake; Olivia and Judith Roy, Lockeport; Clarke and Isla LeBlanc, both of Nictaux; Koen and Mara Balcom, both of Winnipeg; Alexander Dukeshire, Aylesford; Ryan Dukeshire, Petawawa; Mary Dukeshire (Jarid Naugler), Wilmot; great great grandchildren, Kade James Mullins; Anthony Howard; Connor Howard; Olivia Howard and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Chester; son, Ricky; sisters, Pauline and Irene; brothers Donald, Harold and Russell; grandson, Scott Gates and son-in-law, Dale “Jim” Elliott. In keeping with Olga’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2:00PM Friday, February 28, 2025, in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, toll free 1-855-825-3448 with Rev. Jeff Milne officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. Private family interment will be in the Nictaux Cemetery. For those unable to attend the service there will be a livestreaming of the service available at 1:50 p.m. AST by selecting the ‘live stream’ option on the funeral home webpage.
