Oleg Telizyn was the son of Reverend Father Joseph Telizyn and Melania Telizyn (née Semkiw). He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Zdzislaw Turzanski and Omelan (Emil) Telizyn.
Oleg and his family were forced to flee Ukraine from invading forces during WWII and became imprisoned in an extermination camp before eventually being transferred to a displaced persons camp in Aschaffenburg, Germany. Following the war, Oleg and his family were released from the camp and were able to join extended family in Canada in 1949, arriving first in Hamilton, Ontario before moving to Brantford, Ontario where Reverend Father Telizyn was assigned as a parish priest. Oleg completed high school in 1953 and pursued his music studies with John Weinzweig and Alberto Guerrero. In 1963, he graduated with his Honours Bachelor of Music from the University of British Columbia. From 1964 to 1972, Oleg worked as a classical music producer with the CBC on the Thursday Night Concert with host Sir Ernest McMillan along with producing other CBC music programs. After leaving the CBC, Oleg joined the faculty at St. Clair College (1972-1977) and served as Music Director, organizing the St. Clair College Concert Band with conductor Hank Gingell. In 1977, Oleg became the Director of the McGill University Conservatory of Music where he succeeded in increasing the student body to over six hundred students, offered provincial music exams to over nine hundred students, and organized branches of the conservatory throughout Montreal. In 1981, Oleg launched the Oleg Telizyn Music Studio in Burlington, Ontario where he taught piano and music composition until his retirement at age seventy-five.
Oleg leaves behind his beloved wife and partner of fifty-six years, Sylvia (née Kovacs), his three children Adrian (Carrie), Paula, and Christina (Terry) and his treasured grandchildren, Jessica, Joshua, Emma, William, Elliot, Riley, Danica and Cole.
Recently Oleg struggled with his health including vision loss and skin cancer. His family is forever grateful for the excellent care he received from Dr. Marianne Hopkins, Dr. Justin Lee, Dr. Joseph Korkis along with the Juravinski Cancer Centre, McMaster Family Health Clinic and the Burlington Pain and Palliative Care Team.
A private cremation and interment will be held with family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Juravinski Cancer Centre or the Juravinski Research Institute.
