Norma Ablack-Manning Obituary
Norma Ablack-Manning, 76, of Saint John, NB, died on February 18th, 2025, after a battle with cancer. She was born on April 13,1948, to Florence (Roberts) and Norman Manning, in Manchester, UK.
Norma joined the British Army right after high school, at the age of 17, becoming part of the Women’s Royal Army Corps. She stayed in the military for ten years, until she was medically discharged, much to her dismay.
Norma had a big heart, especially for people and animals with additional needs and disabilities. This led her to adopt two sons who have intellectual disabilities. She adopted Devon at age 11, and Nick at age 3. They were the light of her life. She then went on to foster children when her own boys were grown, including fostering medically fragile children.
Norma married Karla on October 2, 2010, in Portland, Oregon, USA. They had no children together, but adopted many animals together over the years, including ones with medical needs. Their dog Smudge, who had Spina Bifida, was the world to both Norma and Karla. He preceded her in death earlier this year.
Norma was the person in her family who moved away from the area where she grew up. She moved to Portland, Oregon in 1999, and stayed there until moving with Karla to her home country of Canada in 2018.
She is survived by her spouse Karla, sons Devon and Nick, sister Sue, niece Justine (John), grand-nephew Jack, as well as other nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Norman and Florence, sister Barbara, and niece Lindsay.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all of the staff, doctors, and volunteers at Bobby’s Hospice, who provided Norma with the best care possible during her final weeks.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB E2J 2G3; (506) 646-2424. In respecting Norma’s wishes, cremation has taken place with a private Celebration of Life to be held at a later date. Memorials or donations can be made to Bobby’s Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Society of New Brunswick, or the International Rett Syndrome Foundation.
