CROWE, Nina Elva “Elva” (nee Buck)
Elva Crowe, a beacon of warmth and creativity, passed away peacefully in her 99th year on Sunday, March 16, 2025, with her family by her side at Lisaard House.
Born on August 23, 1926, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Elva’s life was one of dedication, passion, and loving service, which touched the hearts of all who knew her.
As the cherished wife of the late Ira Leslie Crowe for 35 years, Elva’s love story was one for the ages, marked by devotion and companionship. She was a guiding light and cornerstone for her family, including her children: Leslie (Elaine), Mona (Ron), Dennis (Denise), Owen (Louise), Kelly (Valerie), Kathy (Joel), Patricia (Todd), the late Theresa (Leigh) and the late Christian (Lee). Her legacy of love is carried on by her 22 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and a special great-great-grandchild, who will miss her deeply.
Predeceased by her parents William Earl Buck and Mary Theresa Murphy, as well as her sister Mona Edith Gates. Elva is lovingly remembered by18 nieces and nephews, and the many great-nieces and great-nephews who had the privilege to know her.
Elva’s life was also defined by her role as an educator. She began her career as a primary school teacher and, driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a desire to make a difference, returned to school in her later years to become an Early Childhood Education teacher. Her passion for nurturing young minds led her to open her own daycare, where she shaped countless lives with her intelligence and kindness.
In addition to her family and career, Elva was a pillar in her community. She dedicated many years to The Daughters of Rebekah Group, Canadian Girls in Training, and the United Church Women’s Group, sharing her love and leadership. Her angelic voice graced the church choir, and she taught Sunday School with a gentle and loving hand. Elva’s influence reached far beyond her immediate circle, touching the lives of many through her service and commitment.
Elva’s zest for life was evident in her hobbies and interests. Known for always wearing her best dresses, even for a simple grocery run, she shone in elegance and grace. Her hands were rarely still, as she loved knitting hats for preemies with Guardian Angel’s, and engaging in a variety of crafts, including crocheting, sewing, and quilting. Elva was also a skilled handy(wo)man—whenever Ira went on a fishing trip, he knew he’d return to a new project completed by his industrious wife. Her enthusiasm for DIY’s endeared her to many and her home was a testament to her creative spirit.
A proud member of quilted guilds and an avid doll collector, Elva’s artistic flair was evident in every aspect of her life. Her admiration for the Queen reflected her own regal nature, and those who knew her could attest to her intelligent, loving, and creative personality. Elva’s handiwork and collections will remain treasured family heirlooms, encapsulating her talent and passion.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to her PSW’s, nurses, and support staff from Care Partners and Paramed for taking such good care of Elva over the years, and to the staff at Lisaard for making Elva’s final days so comforting.
Resting at Corbett Funeral Home (95 Dundas St N, Cambridge) where family and friends are invited to her funeral service on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 1pm.
