Neil Hooey Obituary
In loving memory of Neil Bertram Hooey
1944-2025
It is with sad hearts we announce that Neil Bertram Hooey, of Bewdley, Ontario, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Peterborough Regional Health Centre at the age of 81. Neil was born in Stouffville, Ontario on March 14, 1944. He was the son of Leonard and Verna Hooey. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Wayne Hooey, and sister, Cathryn Trim.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years, Donna, his son, Brent Hooey, stepsons Brent Hutton (Shari), Todd Hutton (Cindy), and stepdaughter Wendy Hutton. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Devon, Tyler, Kennedy, Livi, Abby, and Zander. He will also be sorely missed by his brother-in-law, Robert Reid, nieces Leanne Kealy and Patti Robertson, and nephews, Willie Reid and Randy Reid (Kristen).
Since his father was a bank manager, Neil grew up in several towns, including Claremont, Woodville, Orono and Bowmanville. During his younger years Neil enjoyed spending his time at the family cottage at Willow Beach, near Kirkfield. He attended public school in Woodville and Orono and was a graduate of Bowmanville High School.
In his youth he worked at the Dominion Store and the Royal Theatre in Bowmanville. Later, he worked at a number of different establishments, including the Goodyear plant in Bowmanville, General Motors in Oshawa, and as a store manager at Stedmans in Preston, Ontario. He also worked as a variety store manager, a building superintendent, and a cook at various restaurants in Toronto.
Neil was a man of many talents. He once built a wooden boat from a kit in his driveway. He also liked to draw and paint various yard signs. Some of his early interests were coin collecting, scuba diving, and photography.
Neil enjoyed many summers at the Hooey cottages on Hemlock Point on Lake Muskoka. He particularly liked boating and water-skiing on the lake. He also enjoyed spending time with his wife Donna, and family, at his cottage in Harwood on Rice Lake.
Neil loved all of his family, and took great pride in them, and though he is gone now, we are left with many happy memories of the good times we shared together.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Mill Valley Funeral & Cremation Centre, Millbrook, Ontario. Neil will be cremated according to his wishes and no funeral service will be held. A celebration of life for Neil will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Neil’s memory to Community Works (the Bewdley Food Bank).
