Miriam Buswell
janvier 4, 1949 — mars 5, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family of Miriam Jean (Steacy) Buswell announce her passing on Wednesday March 5, 2025. She left this world peacefully and surrounded by love. Left to cherish her memory are daughter Kerry (David), grandchildren Madelyn and Oliver; brothers- and sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews; great nieces, and nephews; and two Japanese exchange student daughters. Miriam was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband of 36 years, John; her brother Graham and sister-in-law Debby; aunts and uncles, and parents in law.
Mom was born in Plenty, Saskatchewan to parents Dick and Mary Steacy on January 4, 1949. As a child, Mom and her family moved from Plenty to Kerrobert and finally to Prince Albert where she graduated from high school. Mom convocated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Home Economics and her B.Ed. AD from the University of Saskatchewan.
In 1973, she accepted a four year contract with CUSO at Njala University College in Sierra Leone. This time left a lasting impact on Mom and created important memories that she was able to revisit up until the end of her life. Upon her return to Canada, Mom taught in Prince Albert and it was during this time she met her future husband, John Buswell. Mom and Dad were married on December 23rd, 1980.
Mom moved to Borden to join Dad on the family farm. Mom worked as the Teacher Librarian at the Borden School for many years as well as teaching in Radisson and Langham. In 1986, they welcomed their daughter, Kerry. In 2012, Mom and Dad were excited to welcome Kerry’s husband David to their family. Mom’s absolute pride and delight was becoming Nana to her grandchildren Madelyn and Oliver. She was always excited to spend time with her grandchildren and looked forward to their stories.
Mom was a long-time volunteer board member for the Borden Library. She had a life-long love of books and was passionate about supporting local libraries. Once she retired, and her health changed she felt fortunate to be able to still access books through the technology of daisy readers. Mom was very thankful for the opportunity to travel within Canada with Dad, particularly their trips to Churchill, MB and Haida Gwaii, BC as well as Newfoundland.
For many years, Mom and her closest friends Sharon, Mary, Gayle, and Lorraine, also known as the “Walkie Talkies” would meet to walk, talk, and support each other. The family would like to thank these friends for always lifting Mom up and helping her navigate through changing times.
Seven years ago Mom chose to move to Diamond House in Warman, SK where she established close friendships with many other residents and staff. The family sincerely thanks Diamond House, and especially Melanie, Kristine and the staff of House 5, for their support and care for both Miriam and Kerry. As well, the family would like to thank the many dear friends who supported her throughout her illness.
The service to celebrate Mom’s wonderful life will be held on March 11, 2025 at St. John’s Anglican Church, Borden, at 2:00 PM. For those who are so inclined, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church, Borden or the Huntington’s Society of Canada.
