Mildred Jean Brown Obituary
Mildred Jean Brown
December 21, 1934 – February 6, 2025
It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our loving mother, Mildred “Jean” Brown. She passed peacefully away with her daughter by her side on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at the age of 90 years old.
Mom was a beautiful, loving, and kind mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend. She loved her family and friends dearly.
She was predeceased by her husband George Edward Brown; parents Martha and Edward Ash; Siblings: Alice, Margaret, Ethel, Edward and Herbert.
Born and raised in St. John’s, she was married with four children, five grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family was her pride and joy. As a young woman she worked at the United Cotton Mills as a seamstress, where she learned to sew as well as speak a little German. She planted cucumbers at the Sprung Green House. Nanny Jean posed for a crime stoppers billboard. Her lifetime career was waitressing. She was employed at various fine dining restaurants where she met numerous interesting people and excelled in the art of flambe cocktails. She continued her career at many a church banquet functions well into her old age. She was an avid supporter and member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 1. Volunteering, selling poppies, darts, and dancing that she enjoyed for years.
She had a passion for poetry and wrote poems for Remembrance Day which she displayed at the Legion. Mom also loved to swim, read, walk, dance, long drives up the shore and flea markets.
Leaving to mourn with beautiful memories are her adoring family Ed Brown, Randy Brown (Brenda), Judy Butler nee Brown (Neil), Dan Brown; grandchildren: Cyndi Major nee Brown (Chris), Colin Butler (Katrina), Cheryl Brown (Steve), Angela Brown (Sam), Matthew Brown (Stephanie); great-grandchildren: Callie Major “joy of her heart” and little Carter; brother and sister-in-law Les Brown and Barbara Power nee Brown. Her wonderful loving nieces and nephews: The Drake’s, The Ash’s, The Brown’s, The Tucker’s, The Richard’s as well as her amazing friends at Kelly Brook Apartments, the Legion and the Sheehan Family. She had a positive impact on all that she met and was truly one of a kind.
The family would like to thank with deep gratitude the staff of the palliative care unit at the Miller Center for their patience and care. “You made her journey so very peaceful”.
There will be no visitation. A Funeral service will be held at Barrett’s Chapel, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Wednesday, February 12 at 2:00pm. Interment to follow at the Topsail United Church Cemetery, CBS.
As an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers, donations in Jean’s memory would be graciously accepted at the local SPCA and Food Bank.
