In his sleep, with his loving wife by his side, Mike passed away on February 6, 2025 at the Hospice Residence in Windsor at the age of 85. Survived by his loving and devoted wife Angela (née DeSantis) to whom he was married for nearly 45 years. Cherished father of Maria (Adam Simpson) and John. Proud Nonno of Isabella and Gabriella – they are his real pride and joy! Predeceased by his siblings Frances (Adelfino Pennesi), Josephine (Jimmy Sofianov), Antonio (Maria), and Alfredo. Brother-in-law to Fran Lauzon (Ken) and Mary Bondy (Dennis). Uncle Mike, Zio Michael, or Little Michael – take your pick! – to Mario Pennesi (Rita), Linda Badour (Marc), Daniela Sofianov (James), Susan Howie (Kent), Michael Bondy (Diane), Angela Crawford (Ryan), Laura Conrad (Chance), Christopher Bondy (Courtney) and their families. Mike will also be missed by many more nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and incredibly close friends – who are, as he would say, practically family – in Canada, Italy, and the USA.
Mike was very proud of his work. He came to be known as a well respected architectural engineer and draftsman, often finding very practical solutions to problems that stumped his colleagues with more experience and higher education.
He cherished his roots and his culture, and was a very active founding member of the Ciociaro Club and also a member of the G. Caboto Club. Both are places where you could often find him on the bocce court. Mike was known for his homemade wine, crafted using only traditional techniques, for which he won many awards over the years.
Mike enjoyed being outside in the sun. He could talk for hours about the state of the art indoor Bocce courts at the Ciociaro Club that he helped design, and end the conversation reminding you that Bocce is best outdoors, so that’s where he wanted to play. Mike was a runner, completing many marathons – including Boston and New York – but really, he ran for both health and enjoyment. Friends often spotted him around St. Clair Beach with his Canadian flag running shorts in the summer, and icicles hanging from his sponge headband in the winter. The treadmill was mostly a place to hang his running gear to dry. When he stopped running he still stayed outside, tending to his flower gardens with great care.
Along with Angie, they travelled far and wide – to discover new and interesting places, back to Italy to visit family as often as they could, sailing on many cruises or visiting the friends they made in Delray Beach in their shared retirement. Mike seemed, at times, to be a man of a million lives – the things he enjoyed, stories he could tell, and experiences he has had could easily fill a book! He planned to write it after his 85th birthday in November, but before he could get started a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and very quick decline just wouldn’t allow it. The stories we have heard and memories we have shared will keep him alive with all of us. Please continue to share them.
In recent months the two things Mike wanted to share with everyone are to remember that we never stop learning, and that family is everything.
There are so many people to thank, it is impossible to list them all. Most recently Dr. Steven Berecz and his staff, the countless wonderful doctors and team members we have met on this short journey, and the exceptional staff and volunteers at The Hospice of Windsor and Es County. They provided exactly what Mike wanted for his final days. To all of you – your care, compassion, and professionalism will never be forgotten.
The family kindly asks that donations are made to the Hospice of Windsor and Es County for the Hospice Residence program.
