Michael “Mike” Uhryn
The family of Michael “Mike” Uhryn is saddened to announce his passing on Monday, January 6, 2025 at the age of 88. Mike will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years Nina (Melnichuk) Uhryn; his daughters Colleen Uhryn and Patricia Uhryn; his son Gregory Uhryn and his daughter-in-law Alexis Desrosiers; and his grandchildren Emmett, Milo and Mya who were a bright light in his later years. He is also survived by his elder brother William “Bill” Uhryn and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his eldest brother John.
Mike was born near Rycroft in northern Alberta in June 1936 to Stefan and Maria (Lesyk) Uhryn, the youngest of three brothers. Mike grew up on the farm and later attended the University of Alberta where he earned a BEd, BA and a MA in Political Science. He had several careers over his lifetime including farmer, realtor, partner in Baba’s Village restaurant and social studies teacher, primarily teaching at Victoria Composite High School in the late 1960s and 1970s. He was a gifted musician and loved to play the accordion, especially with his family band, the Hammertones. He was a proud Ukrainian-Canadian and was very active with the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians. Mike was also very politically active with left leaning/socialist views and he ran for positions in the provincial government, Edmonton City Council and the Edmonton Public School Board. He never did get elected but he was a prolific letter writer and champion for causes he believed in including fighting against the Vietnam War. Mike was a man who was not afraid to speak his mind and he had a personality and presence that those who knew him will never forget. He was also a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother that will be deeply missed by his loving family.
The family wishes to thank the staff at CapitalCare Dickinsfield where Mike spent his last few months. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
