Michael Gerard “Mike” During – Onslow
Mountain. It is with heavy hearts that we
announce the passing of Michael Gerard “Mike” During at the
young age of 65, on Monday, February 3, 2025, after a courageous and
lengthy battle with cancer, with his loving and cherished wife Jenny
by his side.
Throughout the last few years, and more recently as of this
past summer, Mike was always positive and looked forward to spending
whatever time he had with his soul mate Jenny and his many loved ones.
Much beloved husband to Jenny; loving father to Kandas (Scott) and
Kris (Krystal); grandfather to Arianna whom he loved so very much.
Remembered dearly and fondly by his sisters, Linda (Jim), Rayanna,
Elaine (Hal); father-in-law, Leander; his sister-in-law, Donna; many
other cherished family members, namely his many nieces, nephews,
cousins, and friends. Mike was the youngest son of the late Raymond
and Doris During and will be missed by his loving stepmother, Gillian
and her children. He was predeceased by his older brother, Richard;
older sister, Diane (Rick); mother-in-law, Annie.
Mike was born in Zweibrücken, Germany, during his
parent’s posting in the RCAF and was raised in Ontario before moving
to Dartmouth, NS, which became his home before finally settling in
Onslow Mountain, NS. Mike was married to Jenny for 30 years and very
much enjoyed living in the countryside, renovating the family home,
driving his tractor, clearing the land, and having a
garden.
Mike worked 35 years as a salesman for ISECO / Work
Authority, and drove his truck hundreds of thousands of kilometers
throughout the Atlantic provinces and could easily recount every mile
marker on the highways. Mike was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan and
had many painful experiences waiting for the Maple Leafs to win
another Stanley Cup. Mike was also a collector of sports memorabilia
and was involved in numismatics (coin collecting) throughout his
lifetime and enjoyed being a member and President of the local Central
Nova Coin Club, with whom he shared treasured experiences and
friendship.
It goes without saying that Mike thoroughly enjoyed yard
saling and he could be counted upon every weekend to mark out his and
Jenny’s plan to search out all garage sales, and this
experience was truly enriched when his sisters were in town. Mike was
very generous with family, friends, and the community throughout his
life.
Cremation has taken place and a remembrance service will be
held 2 p.m., Monday, February 17, 2025, at Mattatall – Varner Funeral
Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, Reverend April Hart officiating. A
planned Celebration of Life will be scheduled for summer, date and
place to be provided later.
The family extends thanks and gratitude to both the VG
Hospital and Colchester East Hants Health Centre (Palliative Care
Unit) for their kindness shown to Mike.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Multiple
Myeloma Cancer Research.
