on January 21, 2025 at 74 years old.
Mel was the Patriarch of our Family helping to take care of the younger siblings. In his younger years, he loved snowmobiling and listening to his music, often naming songs after the first few notes. He was an avid
Chicago Blackhawks fan and one of his most cherished memories was drinking out of the Stanley Cup
following one of their wins. Mel was a “Class A” mechanic and will leave a legacy in his trade. He started his apprenticeship at Towland-Hewitson Construction and then moved to Connell Trucking. Ultimately, Mel
l started his own successful business named “Mel’s Service,” where he assisted countless individuals
countless individuals throughout the Thunder Bay area. Mel had the git of fixing anything that was broken and the intuition to solve complex mechanical problems. He was a perfectionist and took immense pride in his work. He also had a collection of vintage cars that he excelled in restoring and showing at various car shows throughout Canada and The United States. Despite facing health problems over the past 22 years, Mel continued his work as a mechanic and restorer as he loved his profession and helping his community.
Mel is predeceased by his parents Nicholas and Caroline, infant son Donald, brothers-in-law Liam and Bob, sister-in-law Grace, niece Kristine, and cherished dogs Bimbo, Pork Chop, Jody, Chocolate and Sammie.
Mel is survived by his beloved siblings Patricia, Ron (Linda), Sandra, Larry (Linda), Gary, and Gerald (Darlene).
He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be greatly missed by his close friends and colleagues.
The Zurkan family was, and will forever be, incredibly tight-knit. Mel’s passing has left a hole in the family’s hearts that will be never be filled.
“The Farm” will never be the same without Mel’s colourable sense of humour, his kindness, and his generosity. He was cherished beyond words.
Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Mel’s life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated to the Northern Cancer Fund or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Please do not mourn Mel’s death, but instead celebrate his life, his contribution to the community, and his
unwavering loyalty to his family and friends.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
